We're not all serious, prim and proper in Red Deer. In my last post the founder of Red Deer was honored with a very appropriate statue.
We also have a statue of a pig! Here's the story as to why we have a pig statue. We had a small abbatoir close to downtown. One day a farmer was unloading some pigs. Some how one of the pigs escaped. It took off at a rapid pace and got into some brush and trees. Well, they left the pig and would look for him in the morning. The next day they couldn't find the pig. It was winter so tracks were left. They found many places where the pig had taken shelter. Finally after a week or ten days, they captured the pig.
The pig was not in good condition. The powers that be thought it wasn't fair to kill the pig after his great fight. The pig went to a farm to live out his last days.
A few years later, some money was gathered to honor Francis the pig so a statue was made of Francis.
That was awfully nice of them to spare Francis. I have always said that Canadians are the nicest people around.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good PR move.
DeleteAn interesting story of Francis the pig.
ReplyDeleteFrancis made his own story.
DeleteDo the citizens of Red Deer pray to their god - Saint Francis - who is now grunting and leaving piggy tracks in heaven? Nice tale Red.
ReplyDeleteWhen Francis was loose people looked in the paper every day to see if he'd been caught. They set out bait and traps.
DeleteThat’s a fun morning read, Red.
ReplyDeleteThis post brought back many memories.
DeleteThat's a great story about an interesting animal. Good for you, Francis.
ReplyDeletePeople couldn't believe that a pig could out smart them.
DeleteAll hail, Francis the pig. I hope he enjoyed his peaceful retirement.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Francis had comfortable dig to spend the rest of his life.
DeleteHaving raised pigs before, I know they can be hard to capture. What a nice story!
ReplyDeletePigs are smart and fast.
DeleteA fun story about Francis the pig.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe that he was so hard to catch.
DeleteThat is so cute!
ReplyDeleteHe was a tough old pig.
DeleteI think they made a good decision not to kill Francis after his great flight for freedom!
ReplyDeleteThey would have been criticized severely if they butchered Francis.
DeleteGreat story!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteYay for Francis!
ReplyDeleteWe always root for the under dog.
DeleteWhat a wonderful story, thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteGreat story!
ReplyDeleteWow such a heartwarming story of a pig dear Red 🥹
ReplyDeleteHow sweet of you to share it with us 👍♥️
I really appreciate community who took such a thoughtful step to honour the pig 👌🥰
I had to look up the word abbatoir. Here such a place is called a slaughter house. Also, here Francis was a talking mule, not a pig! Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Sorry too that Yorkshire Pudding’s idea of what is funny is so rude.
ReplyDeleteYou have to admire Francis for his great escape. I'm glad he got to live happily on a farm for the rest of his days.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story!
