PEACEFUL SUMMER EVENING

I've commented many times on how much I love the long daylight hours we have here.

There's more to it than that. We get to be outside and enjoy long evenings. Now each evening has it's own characteristics. Many times the wind doesn't go down until just before sunset. We get to see some interesting sunsets.

What I really like are those very calm evenings. It seems that people follow a schedule throughout the year and they are not out in the evening. So it's quiet. No people on the street! Very few cars. So with the coming of sunset the day seems to quietly wind down.

So on June 30 I decided to go out just before 10 PM and see if I could catch the peaceful evening. When I looked at the photos, it surprised me at how light it was.

So here there's little activity in the evenings even if it's light. However, in the Arctic it as different. We had sun up for 24 hours a day. People were active at any time of the day. I met some of my students out at 4 AM. Inuit got up to hunt at any time to take advantage of the tide to go out of the bay. One teacher got mixed up with time and came to school just before 9 Pm. She got teased for a long time.

  1. That stillness just before dusk...when the midgies emerge!!

I sometimes wonder when you see clouds coming over in the evening..and you can see the sky in the gaps..how much lighter it would be with a clear sky.

Is it entirely a good thing that we rule much of our lives by the clock, not by nature?

    1. You are at approximately the same latitude so have the same amount of light.

  2. Peaceful photographs. I laughed at the poor teacher turning up for work in the evening - very disconcerting.

  4. Love those long daylight evenings too. How about another photo of the same area and time on July 30th?

    1. That's a good idea about photos on July 30 to show the comparison.

  5. The length of your summer days is so interesting to me, Red. Gz and Graham in Scotland and have similar photos. They must be at a similar latitude.

    1. They are roughly the same latitude. Graham probably more than here.

  6. It does look very light. I use a sleep mask at this time of year because it stays light for so long. Happy Fourth to my Canadian friends, too.

    1. Now you're one of the few who likes daylight savings time. But I see that you enjoy the long pleasant evenings.

  8. Although I like the longer daylight hours, I'm not sure I could hack 24 hours or daylight and definitely couldn't function with 24 hours of darkness later in the year.

    1. As a young person I thrived on both of these situations. On 24 hour days you seem to have much more energy. With no sun you take it easy.

  9. That's so interesting, Red. I don't go out after dinner. I will watch TV from 7 to 9 and then read for an hour before bedtime at 10 pm.
You have a lot of energy at the end of the day!

  10. I like to go out after dinner here too. We have a very long twilight. Unfortunately the mosquitoes like it too, so I am usually in the house by 8:00 unless I am active.

  11. Very peaceful, Red. I fell asleep in a recliner in front of the t.v. and went to bed to read for awhile before turning out the light and going back to sleep by 8:30. Of course, the cat starts on me at 4:30 a.m. and we don't have Daylight Savings Time.

  12. Red,

Beneath the glow of lingering light,
You wandered out near end of night.
The streets were hushed, the world stood still—
A sunset wrapped in evening chill.

While others miss the dusk’s soft show,
You paused to watch the day’s last glow.
From Arctic sun to prairie sky,
You’ve chased the light where few would try.

So here’s to calm and quiet air—
    Those golden hours beyond compare.

    John

  13. I love the time of evening you are describing. I used to love to walk just at dusk and early dark. I'm wary of doing that now, especially with a bear being sighted numerous times in our neighbourhood! But the calm and quiet of that time of night is beautiful.

  15. One thing I miss is being out in the evening. I'm bound by my caregivers schedule.

  16. Sounds beautiful dear Red 🤗
You remind me some priceless evenings spent in native home with nature 🥹
I am glad you found a calm and gorgeous sunset time 🥰

  17. I don't think I'd like 24 hours of daylight. We went to Iceland in August many years ago and even that was a challenge -- it was only dark about two hours a night.

  18. Peaceful nights are a wonderful experience. Now that we have moved, we got lots of peaceful nights. The place we moved from had a pub that stayed open until 3 in the morning with crappy bands playing and then the people would hang out on the streets making all kinds of moise. We hated it.
