There were some excellent comments on my last post that reminded me of some things I should say.
My last post covered the challenges of manuals and instructions on various devices. We all know the challenges of setting up new products. When the same manual is meant for a dozen or more products things get fuzzy in a hurry.
For seniors, some ordinary activities become a challenge. so around the home things we've done all the time become a bit of a challenge.
So here are two things that are a great help around the home.
I have a good magnifying glass which is out and handy to use. I have a good magnifying glass which has a light with it. I got this magnifying glass at the casino. Once again I don't gamble but I do eat at the Casino. A while ago they gave us goody bags and the magnifying glass was one of the things in the bag. We both got a bag so we each have our own magnifying glass. They are a big help when it comes to dealing with the nasty small print.
Then I have a very special flashlight. I keep a flash light handy both day and night. I recommend these little flashlights as they have a special lens and bulb that makes things very bright. I would like to have another flash light These flashlights run for a bout 50 dollars but are well worth it. I got mine at a very good price. I was out with my birding group and I looked down and saw something that looked like a lanyard. I kicked it and found this flashlight in the snow. A homeless person had dropped it.
So these are two devices that I find very helpful.
Now if I could only focus the camera to get a clear picture, life would be good.
Red, I’m going to guess that most of the folks who comment here on Hiawatha House are seniors. All seniors need these two items! I have a similar magnifying glass … with light … and the light is important! As for the flashlight … it looks like a really good one. The key thing about the flashlight … for me … is remembering where I last placed it. 😊 John
ReplyDeleteI like your post and may write one myself as I have two handy jar opener devices I could post about. A bright flashlight and magnifying glass are in my home too.
ReplyDeleteA good jar opener is another thing seniors need.
DeleteThese two items have become indispensable to me also. I guess it's not surprising because they make seeing easier and that makes everything easier. Well, everything except non-labelled ON/OFF buttons, that is.
ReplyDeleteSome user manuals are clear as mud.
DeleteI agree, the magnifying lens and the flashlight are important devices to have handy! Take care, have a great day!
ReplyDeleteMy husband has a light on a band which he can wear on his head. It is really useful for jobs needing both hands.
ReplyDeleteHead lamps are great. we used them for back packing in the Rockies.
DeleteI use a magnifying glass on a lanyard for sewing fine work. It has a light on it, too. We use head torches if we walk at night and a bright pencil torch when looking for lost objects in the house.
ReplyDeleteWe need many crutches at this stage of our life.
DeleteI have a magnifying glass that is almost 100 years old. It has come to me from my parents after mom's mom used it. I intend to pass it on.
ReplyDeleteI have a flashlight like that, and I have a light on/in the toilet at night. When it sense vibrations in the dark, it turns on. Then I can see the bowl, which helps because it is hard for me to hear what goes in the bowl.
the old magnifying glasses were made of glass, not plastic like these magnifying glasses.
DeleteI like the idea of a magnifying glass with a light! I will be looking for one of those. My camera has a button to turn to adjust to my eye sight.
ReplyDeleteThe light on the magnifying glass makes a big difference.
DeleteI've been known to take a picture of the fine print so I can zoom in on my phone and read it. This happens a lot when trying to figure out the correct "watch style" battery I need to buy to replace in a device.
ReplyDeleteWith the small print on batteries, I cannot understand what the battery people are thinking.
DeleteHi Red, so far I haven't managed to find a good magnifying glass though I've tried a few different ones over the years. But those small flashlights are great. I have several and I put them all over because I never seem to find one when I need one, lol. They are very useful little devices.
ReplyDeleteWe spend a lot of time running around looking for flashlight.
DeleteThat is handy advice, Red! I do have several magnifying glasses to use. I can use the flashlight on my phone which is pretty good but we also have several large flashlights around the house.
ReplyDeleteA handy tool I use a lot is a rubber grabber - I have several to help me open jar lids.
Yes, I need a good jar opener.
DeleteBoth items are useful and necessary to read the fine print!
ReplyDeleteIt seems the producers of products don't think about the size of print on the product.
DeleteI can tell you now, even young people struggle to read some of the print in manuals, I think a lot of them probably just get thrown away.
ReplyDeleteManuals are on line. I refuse to print 65 pages for a manual.
DeleteA flashlight is a must have! I have a magnifying glass at home next to my computer!
ReplyDeleteA GOOD flashlight is a must have.
DeleteI have a bright headlamp that provides some great light.
ReplyDeleteI have two magnifying glasses with lights, and a headlamp with a very bright light that has gotten more valuable with every passing day.
ReplyDeleteI found at Walmart (I know, I know) a package of ten small flashlights for a very good price, I think about 10 dollars or less. They are excellent and we have them all around the house. We gave a pack to our daughter for Christmas and she though, "What? Flashlights?" But she soon realized their value and has them all around her house. So there. That's my non-compensated commercial for the day!
ReplyDeleteIn your case these make a big difference in your life.
DeleteA good flashlight is always handy. We have several, which guarantees that when we need it, no one will remember who had it last or where it was used.
ReplyDeleteWe spend time looking for the flashlight for sure.
DeleteI have a magnifying glass with a light! Couldn't be without it. Also without my "picker upper". It grabs stuff that lands on the floor.
ReplyDeleteYou almost need to keep the magnifying glass in your pocket.
ReplyDeleteWould you believe I have magnifying glasses in several places in mom's room, one on the kitchen table and one on my desk? My near vision is not good. And yes, there are flashlights in just about every room in case of power outage. I even had a mini flashlight hanging on my backpack, BUT the battery died.
ReplyDeleteI need a good magnifying glass. I have a thing about good flashlights, and have them all over the house, even a couple of camping lights upstairs and downstairs. My husband thinks I am amusing and says it must be from when I used to read under the bedclothes as a child. I just love flashlights, and yes they are good ones for traveling also.
