That Dang Camera

Last fall I bought a new camera. I was so proud of my new possession   that I wrote a post about it.

As I told you before I wanted some zoom, pixels and a good handle. I got those things and "much more."I don't know if I'll ever use the "much more." I set it up on Easy auto. This setting allows the camera to do most things for you automatically.

Every once in a while I look at the menu and some of the options. As I'm meddling I sometimes accidentally change settings.

Apparently I changed something a while ago. It took me a while to notice the change  so I can't recall what I fiddled with.

So I recently noticed that the flash was not working. At first I wondered if there was something wrong with the flash. I went to look for the 216 page manual. I couldn't find it on my computer. I tried everything. Finally, there it was in plain sight all the time. So look up flash. There are two different sets of numbers so It took awhile to find flash. In my first session I discovered that I had probably turned the flash off but I couldn't find out how to turn the flash back on.

So after a few days of worrying I finally got back to the challenge. It all depends on how you read the book. After half an hour today I finally got the flash turned back on. While puzzling the problem, I learned other things about the camera. So I'm going to have to go through the manual step by step to learn more so that I don't accidentally turn something off that's important.

Well, it didn't spoil my summer!

  1. I wish that they would actually give you a book instead of having to read it on the computer! I have a new camera to and recently took a photography class to learn more about the camera but my problem is trying to remember what I learned. Oh well. Glad you figured out how to get the flash back on.

  3. My problem has been the same as vickit's. When I got my latest camera, I requested a book to go with it and read it through page by page. And now can't remember very much of it at all. Modern cameras are minor miracles to me.

    1. When I do read I have to try the stuff or I'll never remember it.

  4. Don't worry Red. I can drive a camera and still forget to check what I was last using it for. It makes for some interesting results.

    1. You also get interesting results if you toy with things you don't know about.

  5. I still have too much to learn on my Canon. Problem is... I'll learn something and then if I don't use that feature for a long time, I'll forget how to do something. One thing was remembering how to change the strength of my flash. Sheesh! I would change it to fit the occasion and then forget how to change it back. I use the easy auto a LOT too.

  6. Just bought a new cloths dryer. The wife and bought the one with the least bells a whistles. Place the wet cloths in, set the timer and return when the cycle completes. That works for me. Now... my camera is different story. It has many bells and whistles. I love it!

  7. I would have simply typed my problem in Google or YouTube and an easy fix would have immediately popped up by text or video. I had a fav lamp which had to have new fixins - you know new plug, wire, and new part where bulb goes, plus off on switch. I looked it up on Youtube. A nice fixit guy told me everything I had to do. I went to "Kents", got the new fixins and completed the job. I was so proud of myself and NO, I did not burn the house down. ha,ha As much as I hate to say it, when you buy something new, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS - unfortunately there are NO SIMPLE POINT AND SHOOTS ANYMORE. Glad you figured out the off and on flash. Have a wonderful day SR and MM.

    1. I have googled for solutions. It's surprising how helpful the sites can be.
We've just had our American daughter for three days so it was fun.

    1. Well I had set it on easy auto. If I hadn't been playing I wouldn't have got myself into trouble. Even if I don't use the features you learn more about photography.

  9. There are so many settings on a camera that it can be quite confusing...even when you read the manual! Glad you got your problem worked out.

  10. I have almost completely stopped using my camera, since I use the cellphone camera all the time. The pictures are great, and there's not much fiddling with it to do. :-)

  11. I turn off my flash a lot. It really isn't needed much and decreases chances of red eye should you be taking people pics. I like the 10 second delay so I can run and get into a pic.

  12. I read the manual for something I bought recently (a departure from my usual practice of reading the manual when I need to) and discovered just how much time I saved as a consequence.

  15. These new cameras do everything but dance. Mine has a tons of settings and I try to make sure Iearn all the basics before depending on the camera too much. You can google problems sometimes, rather that going through a 40 page manual.

  17. Oh Red. Your not the only one. When I got my camera.

I had it in another language. I had psuhed something. I read that dang manuel book on line. Do you think I could undersatnd it. Fianlly likea puppy I dragged my tailend to the camera shop in tonw. He laughed. Dang he said you put it in a language I dont even know. He sat with me. He went throughthe whole book. I said oh thank oyu. I undersatnd it.

Now what he told me is how to delte your pictures from the camera manually. Not off when you load them up.

Do you think I remembered. Before I left the shop. He said let me see you do it. Like I was taking pictures of his store and then deleting them as he showed me. I was100% smarts. He said great. You got it. Oh Red. I was ready to throw that camera clean across to another country. When I got home. I forgot all I did.

We have a cellphone most times when I talk to people . I push the button where my ear is. They are gone.

I need a book for Dummies. It does not matter what I use or touch. I am in big trouble.

Now after a year. I think I have mastered it. It is a miracle many times my pictures turn out so nice.

  18. Dang It! Hate when that happens! I'm always messing with my camera and end up messing something up! Lol! Oh well, as long as the pictures turn out.😀 and your right about the manual! It's ridiculous. I don't know what any of the stuff means!

  19. I have lots of fancy settings too, but mostly I use Auto or landscape.
I too wish I had a printed book to reference.

  20. It's been over a year and I still do not know what all the buttons do on my camera. I've messed mine up before by changing something and ended up with these Polaroid looking shots. It took forever to change it back. Now I just stay in auto, or no flash. I'm a chicken.

  21. Hi Red, I think most folks set their camera on auto. It does take some time to do all the various settings manually.
