CAPS!

I used to wear baseball type caps all the time. I had quite a selection of caps but over time they have been  discarded. Now I seldom wear a  cap as they don't seem comfortable.

From time to time I received comments or questions about a cap I was wearing. One cap always drew a puzzled look and a question. The question was , "Where did you get that cap?" I'm not sure why people are puzzled or why they ask. I was never confident enough to ask, "Why do you look at this cap with a puzzled look.

It's a sport's cap. I'm not sure who the Florida Marlins are or were. I don't follow sports. I don't know if this is baseball, basketball, hockey or football!

So how did I come by these caps?

In the 1980's I was a middle school teacher. Our school was a no hat school. That means you didn't wear your cap in class.

Very few kids sat down in class with their cap on. Usually a discrete nod or motion and the kid would take the cap off. When somebody resisted they had to put their cap in top of the filing cabinet and pick it up at the end of the class. Sometimes caps were left and picked up the next day. Sometimes caps were never picked up. The caps went in a filing cabinet drawer. Again some were picked up. But some caps were never claimed.

When I retired I couldn't throw perfectly good caps away. So the caps were brought home and washed and guess who wore them?

  1. Too funny! I have a hat collection, but not from my 1st graders. I used to pick them up during travels, but no more. It's great that you're putting those to good use. They must hold a lot of memories.

    1. No memories with these hats as I had no idea who left them.

  2. We teachers are nodding in understanding. In elementary school, it was usually toys that were confiscated. After a warning, they went into the "June box". Yep, they could get it back at the end of the school year. It didn't take many of these incidents to warn of the rest of the kids not to bring toys to school.

  3. loved this simply cute cap story Red!

I even in my youth never followed any kind of fashion ,same habit is on till now.

My husband is just like me he never give importance to fashion but cares about his wearing lot .so does my eldest son but in following of fashion he he cares little more than us .
my younger son is extremely moody child{14] .last day when he was riding on bike to go out he was worn a western T.shirt and eastern shalwar { traditional paint] I asked him to dress correctly before leaving for out but he said it's okay mother if one has confidence everything looks "in" and i ponder over his point seriously that what we wear with confidence depict our inner strength and becomes part of fashion .

i believe these nice caps look nicer when you wear them Red!

  4. I rarely wear one. I knew a baseball coach that wore won everywhere and then he took it off and I saw he was bald. The lie was exposed.

    1. Well, it does help to cover up a bald spot. I wouldn't want to get sun burn!

  5. Every job needs its perks and the baseball caps were like a retirement gift to yourself. However, what you really need is this cap:-

  7. We have had a huge collection of never worn caps and I don't know where they ever came from. I used to keep them in case they became useful but nobody here is a cap wearer so in the bin they went!
Did you get sentimental about your (default) collection?

  8. That's funny! I sometimes have a cap that I don't wear, and most are covered with pictures and words that don't represent anything I care to be a part of. And I too wonder where the heck they came from. :-)

  13. Hi Red, Great story. I once saw a gentleman in a store with an unusual cap on. I asked him where he got it. He replied, "I found it". That left me smiling for a while. :-)

  14. I really do not like wearing a hat or cap of any kind; it makes my head feel funny. Great post, Red! Those caps multiply on their own, I think :)

  15. Well that makes sense! Why let them go to waste? I bet all kinds of things were left behind in classrooms.

  18. You are probably equipped for life! I hate hats on my head and I'm trying to get used to wearing one on the beach to prevent skin cancer. So far I haven't changed my mind!

  19. Even though I come from Florida, I can't clear up the Marlins issue for you. I think they're basketball, maybe? I bet that Eagles hat is worth some money as a collectible! It's 23 years old!

  20. Oh, they're baseball -- in Miami. I just looked it up. :)

  21. As usual, I'm late reading your posts! Can I ever relate to caps! My husband has owned more caps over the years! When the style changed from those that were stiff and taller in front to the smaller caps that fit your head, I carried two grocery store meat boxes packed with caps to the flea market and sold them for fifty cents each. Now he owns even more. I can not open a closet door without caps falling off the racks. My husband wears a cap all the time. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen the top of his head. :)

  22. Hi Red, I have fallen a bit behind in reading blog posts and when I saw the title of this one I was thinking capital letters and not baseball caps. And that brings me to another question as to why they are not called football or basketball caps...most likely because baseball caps were worn in warmer weather, but not sure. I have taken to wearing caps outdoors in warmer weather but can never keep them on all day as my head gets too hot. Interesting story on how you acquired yours.

  23. We've got caps in every closet in the house I think. Mark quit wearing them years ago and now wears welder's caps. I wear the regular caps when I mow or go outside to keep the sun off my face.

    Have a super weekend!

  24. I wear caps same reason Beatrice remarked. My hubby wears hats as way back when he was in his trade building patios and Chimneys, fireplaces making a living. He never wore a hat. I think back then we were either mongo or did not think the sun raze was any harm. Wrong.
Now the last years a nurse said to him in the office. You better look after that head being bald now. Looks like you have pre-skin cancer . She was right on. He had treatments but I see he may be having reoccurrence again. That will take 6 months to see a Surgeon. So my hubby is 78 and the cancer was from years ago recurred again. So protect your head Red. Better safe then sorry.
