ELVIS PRESLEY'S BIRTHDAY TOMORROW

Tomorrow would have been Elvis's 83rd birthday! It's hard to believe that he died in 1977 ...50 years ago.

There are certain events which happen and you remember the exact place and time you heard the news. I remember hearing about Elvis. I had a recreation property that I was developing the hard way...by hand. As I was working cutting brush and trees , I always listened to my favorite talk radio.  The two hosts announced Elvis's death. I always remember my 8 year old son being shocked by Elvis's death. It was some unbelievable news. Of course, Elvis dominated the rest of the day's news.

Elvis was at the peak of his game from the mid 50's to mid 60's. There aren't many people left who remember Elvis when he was king.

I was a fan of Elvis but not outrageously so. I liked his music. We didn't have TV so I didn't see him. I didn't even see the Ed Sullivan show with Elvis.

Elvis's career ended long before his death.

So tonight I'm going to listen to a little Elvis Presley music to remember the King.

  1. Hard to believe that Elvis left the building over forty years ago! I remember Elvis from the time he was a young stud in black leather, although I was just a kid at the time. I had all of his 45rpm records, although my brother stole them from my room after I left for university. My grandmother and mother were great Elvis fans, so I surprised them with tickets to see the King on May 27, 1976, when he performed in Bloomington, Indiana. It was a memorable concert for them, in fact, the only concert either of them ever attended. When he died a little over a year later they both were able to talk about the time that they saw Elvis perform live. Every time I think of this it makes me happy. I always remember his birthday because it is so close to my own, albeit eighteen years earlier. Happy Birthday, Elvis, wherever you are.

  2. I liked his music, my brother had records of him, but was not a real fan. When I listen to his music now I like those first rock and roll songs, not the romantic ones. I visited Graceland some years ago, he had a crazy idea of decorating a house with a jungle room!

    1. For many people it took a while for them to like Elvis.

  3. Fifty years ago! It's hard to believe how quickly those years have passed. Everyone still knows who Elvis was, even fifty years later. I think I'll enjoy some old Elvis myself, now that I know when his birthday was. :-)

    1. Well, I made a mistake on the 50 years. I was only 40 but I still enjoy him just the same.

  5. We had a crazy congresswoman named Michele bachmann running for president in 2012. She was well known for saying a lot of gaffs, she was in my hometown and said "Happy Birthday Elvis in August"

some guy in the crowd yelled "he died today!"

    1. I made a gaff in this post too. I calculated 50 years instead of 40 years.

    1. Not as bad as you think as I made an error so it's only 40 years since he died.

  7. 1977 was 40 years ago, not 50, Red. Don't scare me like that! LOL!

Seriously, though, I do remember when he died. I was 10 years old and I remember my mom being astonished. I knew who Elvis was but I was too young to be a fan (and I'm still not much of a fan, I must admit).

    1. Thanks for pointing out my error. Yes, you were too young for Elvis and you had many other performers to attract your attention.

  8. He was before my time, admittedly. I wonder if in a century people will still be listening to him.

  10. I liked and still like a lot of Elvis' music. He was incredibly talented but like so many gifted people who live in the public eye he flamed out too young. I remember going to see an Elvis movie with my CGIT group. It was a "reward" and in retrospect kind of a weird one, given that CGIT was a church-based girls' group and Elvis' movies were not really that kind of entertainment :) I noticed the fifty years math issue as well, because I know I graduated from university in 1977 and that would have made me ten years old at the time - ha ha!

  11. I was little when he was very popular. I did like some of his music in the 60s. I was walking to work when I heard he died. How time flies, he's been gone 40 years already.

  15. In 1977 I was 5 or 6 years old .did know him until i started reading magazines in my teens.it was time of lady Diana and my wall was covered with her photos.

I still know little about him and hardlhardly heard his few songs which reflected his wonderful command over skills. Heroes, particularly who leave during their peak era cannot be forgotten for centuries
