A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE

The Micro Manager decided to go to a Chinese Buffet for Mother's Day.

Well , this suited me because I like Chinese food.

This city has three Chinese Buffets. The oldest one has seen better days but to our experience was the best of the three. One of the buffets is smaller with less variety. We tried the newest buffet about five years ago and it was awful. Recently Joe  and Nancy said the new one was very good.

So we went to the old stand by. We looked at the price for seniors. The regular price was covered up with a piece of card board and Mother's Day prices shown.  As far as we could tell they raised the price $5.00 for Mother's Day. We thought that maybe since were at the restaurant that we should eat . A minute later I said, "I'm not eating here when they raise the price that much for Mother's Day."

So off we went and decided to go across the street to the latest buffet that had been terrible. Here , they raised the price  dollar but were open about it. The place was busy and noisy. Good sign. People were having fun.

We were completely surprised to find that the restaurant that we had terrible experience with was absolutely fantastic. Great food! They had extra items like large shrimp, roast turkey, roast beef and a few other extras.

So since the other restaurant was so devious, they've lost a couple of customers.

Now most of the time I would not have walked out of a restaurant, but this time it was a matter of principle. Don't try to rip the customers off on Mother's Day.

  1. That's great news! You found a new place that was good food, and the other place lost customers forever, I'll bet. :-)

  2. Red, I agree completely! I hate it when businesses do things like that to their customers. They deserve to lose customers just like they did - and I bet you were not the first ones to leave. I'm happy to hear the other restaurant was improved and you both had a good meal! Happy late Mother's Day to the Micro Manager!

    1. I fail to understand why somebody would increase their price to such an extent.

  3. That's such a terrible practice. They would lose my business too.

    2. companies that sell gasoline do this to us all the time. Any kind of holiday or public event will see gas prices go up "because of increased demand" or because a high wind blew little David's kite away, seems like there is no end to the excuses. I applaud your action here Keith! Way to go! I love reading your blog posts. You should turn them into a coffee table book! Make your first million! lol :D

  4. That is very rude to raise the prices when you expect many customers. Good you left the place!

  5. Oh, no! Good for you for finding a good one.
I had a bad experience with trying to find a restaurant for breakfast one Mother's Day. We just don't go out! It's way too noisy and crowded!

  8. All's well that end's well. That deviousness made you discover that the other place was now a great choice!

  9. Some good Chinese is always a favorite with me. Raising the price knowing many go out on a holiday isn't my cup of tea.

    1. Mother's Day is a really bad day for raising prices. many kids take their mother out.

  10. I've never heard of raising the prices on a holiday. In my youth that's what people would have called "dirty play"! (the opposite of fair play) Our restaurants here are happy to get the extra traffic and usually even have a lower price on a special for the occasion. But you found a new favourite place for Chinese food, which is a good thing.

  11. Wow. I've never heard of raising prices for a holiday either. Good for you for walking out, and it paid off!

  12. You did good Red! I could see a place raising their prices if they were offering a special menu for that day. However, to raise the price of their regular items for that day is terrible. I'm happy to hear that you walked out! They deserved it and I hope others walked out as well.

  13. That IS pretty shady, to raise the price on Mother's Day. They should have at least given customers something extra to justify (if only partly) the price increase -- a glass of champagne, or some flowers, or something! Glad you liked the new place, at least!

  14. Hi Red, Sure glad it all worked out for a nice Mother's Day Brunch for you two. Have to wonder how long that other restaurant will stay in business.

  15. Hello, it is sad that the restaurants raised their prices for Mother's Day. I like Chinese food, but would rather order off the menu than eating off the buffet. Have a happy day!

  16. That's not good customer service and they even had to cover the original price. Glad you left and then found the other place had better food and prices. You win, they lose!
