CANADA FLAG DAY

February 15 is Canada's national flag day. The flag design was adopted by parliament and the flag raised officially on Feb. 15, 1964. So the flag is officially 60 years old.

Canada has had variations of flags since we were a colony. Gradually, we gained independence little by little until we were able to have our own distinctive flag.

Through the late 50's and early 60's there was a hot debate in parliament about what flag we should have. Many politicians and people wanted to keep the old red ensign. However , after many designs were submitted the red maple leaf with 2 red bars down each side was accepted.

The official flag raising was on Feb. 15 ,  1964.

To me this was a day in your life that is special and you remember it until the end of your life.

In 1964 I was teaching in the Sir Alexander Mackenzie School in Inuvik. About 1000 kids were enrolled in the school at that time. We all went out to the front of the school where the flag pole was and a large brass monument of three rings representing three groups of people.  It was a clear day that was bitterly cold.

We had a very active cadet group and they proudly stood on guard while short speeches were made and then the flag was raised. All through this time I was watching the poor cadets as their ears gradually froze. I was hoping things would end so the kids could get back in the school.

As Canadians we have been somewhat laid back about patriotic issues. Lately, Pres. Trump had put a fire under us with his comments and we are becoming much more patriotic.

However, I still look back to the day when I was present at the flag rising.

WILD FIRES

Since the wildfires in Canada and Alberta  make the news, people sometimes ask if I'm safe or how far away the fires are from me. Then there are the people who have to put up with the smoke from our wildfires.
The last week or ten days much has been in the news about Yellowknife which is the capital of the Northwest Territories. The population of Yellowknife was evacuated. That's 20000 people who had to take a two lane highway. There were fires along the way and it's such a long distance that you make sure that you fill the gas tank at the few gas stations.
These people made it to various places in Alberta where accommodation was available. 3000 came to my home town of Red Deer . Finding accommodation was difficult as other areas had been evacuated from other fires.
Hay River has also been evacuated.
Now these places are a very long way from me.
Driving to Yellowknife from Red Deer is 1602 km ( 995 mi). Driving time is 16 1/2 hours. The direct line from Red  Deer to Hay River is 958 km (595 mi). It's 772 miles by car.
So you see that these areas are along way away.
However, there are fires between Red Deer and those fires.
Now in the cities we have to worry about fires in the urban forest. This city is heavily treed and wildfire is a definite probability.
We've been fortunate to not have too much smoke.
So I am safe but quite worried as to what will happen as the fire season continues.
In the 1960's I visited both Yellowknife and Hay River a number of times. I drove to Hay river twice and flew into Yellowknife many times.

THE CANADIAN ELECTION IS OVER

On Sept . 12, I wrote that we were having an election on Oct. 21 and that I wasn't going to say anything about elections on this blog. I kept that promise so it's my time to say something.

Well the election is over. Some how or other most people are unhappy and some people are downright angry. I don't understand why. We live in a very good country. We have a strong economy, lots of employment , some awesome social programs and some people are so angry that they want to separate from Canada.

We elect 338 parliament members. We have a first past the post system . So whoever gets the most votes wins. We have a proportional representation.

We have three major parties and two small parties.

The campaign was disgusting...too many outright lies.  The parties didn't do much to tell us what their policies would be although I didn't follow much.

The incumbent party (Liberals) won the most seats but not enough for an outright majority so we have a minority parliament. The conservative party of Canada came second. The liberal party will have to walk a fine line and get support from other parties to govern. Sometimes minority parliaments get lots of good things done because they have to cooperate to stay in power and besides people don't want another election right away.

People are really whiny . They all seem to want their own little goodies and the hell with anyone else.

So political junkies are having fun talking about what may happen.

What should happen is that many parliament members need a good push to come to their senses and do what benefits the whole of Canada.
