Can I Wear My New Sweater?

The other day we decided that it was time to wash the sweater that I wear around the house. So when I handed it to my wife I asked her if I should wear my new sweater. She hesitated and had a funny look on her face and then I said, "Or are you going to wrap it up for Christmas?"  She freely admitted yes that's what her plan was.

For the last few years this has been a routine around here. Something that was bought during the year ends up under the Christmas tree.

Shopping with me  goes like this. My wife will come home with a sweater. She will ask me to try it on and see if it fits. She will then ask me if I like it. I can't say no or I would hurt her feelings. So then the sweater is kept. It works like this for most of my clothes. She puts the item away and I soon forget about it and that's why it's so easy for her to put it under the tree. So if I have not been part of the decision it leaves my mind.

So I don't like shopping! I've told you that before. My wife loves shopping. She particularly likes watching for sales. She also likes looking around thrift shops, garage sales, craft sales and open houses. A place like Coombs market near Parksville, BC keeps her happy for hours.

So I dug around in the closet and found a sweat shirt of some kind to wear in the house. Sweater problem solved.

  1. I think your "better half" would have a field day in Young - Cherry Capital of Australia. The country town has clothes shops galore and the prices are incredibly cheap as compared to Sydney or Brisbane - like 50% cheaper for the same article. How do they manage to do it?? Well just send your "better half" and she being from Canada may see what we here can't!!!!!
You'll end up with sweaters of all colours of the rainbow - one for every hour of the day!
Now that little enterprise will keep you occupied for the whole of the Alberta winter months - ha ha.
    Cheers

  2. Ya, we go someplace nice and the best part for her are the shops. If I came to Australia there are a million things I'd like to see.

  3. Why don't you come? You only live once and Air Canada does have direct flights from Vancouver every day. Arrives Sydney after you hopefully have a good long sleep - 14 hours at an early morning hour. The website for Sydney arrivals is down??????
I think it gets here between 7 and 8 am.
Avoid February, the heat would be too much, also August - it is minor Canadian winter weather and I hibernate!!! However, you might even go to the beach - at least the beaches would not be crowded - ha ha! After all I was going to Medicine Hat, Alberta in Janurary,1970 - BUT commenced freezing in Vancouver - bad luck Med. Hat!!!!!
    Cheers

  6. Colin,A ustralia is on my list but I have a few other places I want to go first.
You missed living in a good place when you left Medicine Hat. Warm dry summers. Lots of Chinooks in the winter. Can be a bit windy. It's a big retirement center so it's got to have something going for it!

  7. Sounds so familiar. That is kind of how it goes in my house too - except it is sports logo sweatshirts instead of sweaters for my hubby. His new one is all wrapped and waiting - just a few more days and he can start wearing it.

  11. What a novel idea. I do something similar with my husband except, I usually end up giving it to him before Christmas. Your wife sounds charming.

That is a great photo of you. Did your wife buy the sweater that you're wearing? :)

Thank you for visiting my blog. You put my mind at ease when you said that ducks stuck in the ice usually free themselves.

Have a wonderful day, my friend!

  13. Ha! First of all, Home Farm Girl is far too cheap to spend all that money on airfare just to save a few bucks on sweaters... has been trying to get Airmiles since forever, and I'm betting has just enough now to reach the end of the runway for take-off. She talks, but never really goes. I agree, you only live once.
Too funny about the sneaky sweaters. Does she still put them in the store bag and then attach a bow? I remember a phase of that sort of gift wrapping, which was a crying shame b/c HFC is so good at wrapping. I learned a lot of creative things, as well as solid technique, from her as a kid.
At least you'll be warm, if not well dressed...

  14. Mom finally realized that she wouldn't live long enough to get past the end of the runway as you say. She cashed in the air miles for a $25 gift certificate which we did on computer.
Really funny that the week before on "Sunday Morning " they had a piece on women shopping for men, but I missed it. I heard the letters the next week. It must have been a good piece as there were many letters.

  15. Your post reminds me of my mom. When we were growing up, she always bought clothes well ahead of the festivals to avoid last minute shopping and the frenzy that go with it.

  16. She might still have a surprise or two up her sweater sleeve. If I absolutely needed the recipient of a gift to try it on first, I'd buy it in a colour I wouldn't intend to keep. Once the right fit was established, I'd exchange it for a better colour. Surprise! ;)

  17. I have been surprised before with this arrangement. My wife is famous for buying things well ahead of times so she gets good prices and selection.
