The Trouble with Free Lunches

Now I'll be up front. I don't like free lunches! Now before you leave and say, "Nut job!" I'll defend myself.

Home Farm Girl is absolutely obsessed with free stuff. She thinks she's died and gone to heaven when she gets samples of anything in the grocery stores.

So today a mall had an appreciation of seniors lunch. The lunch was free and the first 200 got a free gift. The mall is about 7km away so Home Farm Girl couldn't walk. The bus would take about the same time. So I was embarrassed into taking her to the mall. So guess what, I'll have to stay for lunch! Now we had to be there early so Home farm Girl would get the free gift. I was also lined up to get a free gift as well but we weren't too smart as they found out we were a couple so only one gift to a house hold. So what was the big free gift? A bag of candies! Just what all old folks would like! Oh and there was a ticket in the package for a free picture with Santa. So guess who had to get a picture with Santa?

Now I don't like crowds! Give me the wide open spaces. There are probably 500 people who take in the lunch so there's a mammoth line up. There's a rinky dink table where they serve you Cole slaw , potato salad, sandwiches that are flat, cookies and drinks. All of this on plastic  plate! There are various musical groups which entertain you. There was some toe tapping old time music. Now to go through all this pain is not worth the free lunch. I would rather be out or just plain at home at the computer reading blogs.

So Home Farm Girl had  great time! After I was dragged to the mall I actually did enjoy myself! You can't be that miserable that you wouldn't enjoy a free lunch.

  1. I guess that lunch and I would have parted company before we even met. Sounds hideous to me. There's food, and then there's filling.

  2. You've just given me another reason to dislike free lunches. Quite a birthday present Eh? Rutabagas!I happen to like them.

  3. "Bluey" mate

Anything free these days is virtually worth nothing. Just a case of big naming themselves.
Still it was a day out and an opportunity to meet 500 odd "starving" people - ha ha!
You should have taken a heap of your famous carrot soup to warm the "starving" up.
    Cheers

  4. I'd feel exactly the same way and though it was a grumbly event for you, Home Farm Girl had a great time. It was sweet of you to do that for her. As for some of the others, it might be the only socializing that they do. I know a couple of people who would jump at the opportunity. Like you, I'd prefer to jump out of the way. ;)

  5. Hilary, it sounds like you've been to a few of these. I agree that for many people it's a great time to get out. Many were brought by the various buses that serve senior residences. To be honest about it I did get some pleasure out of it. It's just I would have been doing something else.

  6. Colin: Good to hear from you again. I don't need a chance like this to get out. I have lots of other places I would rather go. Yes, I would have enjoyed my carrot soup more. There were local musicians who were worth listening to.

  7. Thanks "Bluey"
Now fixed and I can see the comments of others.
Maybe getting a lost panic attack in seaside Terrigal, did serve a purpose after all???
I think getting lost in Terrigal was not as dramatic or fearsome as being lost in the Artic area on Banks Island! God help, I would have freaked out and been polar bear dinner - ha ha!
No, I don't really like air-conditioning but I think living in your area in winter I would change my views.
    Cheers

  8. That's so funny!
We went to a craft and artisan sale nearby. TOO MANY PEOPLE!!!!
Me being in education, and crowd control such a big part of the job.
Hubby was in the airline industry and dealt with tons of people at the Toronto airport, or when there was a strike, he had to do crowd control at the Ottawa airport.
I tell people we don't go to big group things as we 'don't play well with others!'

    Cheers from Cottage Country!

  9. Jenn , I can play if it's a crowd I know like my class or the whole school...supervising dances. Maybe it's that I feel more comfortable with kids.

  10. Colin , thanks for the tip about the comments.
Getting lost is all relative. Some of the urban areas are probably more dangerous than the polar bear. But getting lost has a sobering effect as we see how vulnerable we are.

  11. You were patient..we don't do the free stuff either..or the in the middle of the night sales. Doesn't sound like a great lunch menu..but if the music was good you could have danced:)
