Snow, Snow and More Snow

Snow seems to be a popular topic on Hiawatha House. There have been four posts on snow in 2012.  I like snow and where I live we have some interesting snow occasions.
The lilac hedge full of snow

Yesterday we had weather warnings for heavy snowfall. We were warned that we could get from 10 - 25 cm(4-10 in.) of snow. About 7:00 PM light snow started but it melted as it hit the ground. By 10:00 PM it was snowing heavily. I looked out at 2:00 and 4:00 AM and the sky was full of snow. If I wasn't so lazy I would have gone outside and taken a picture of the snow falling in the street light.
The poor old car was heavily covered

Now I know that I can blame this snow on followers in the north west U. S. The forecaster guy said that this system got organized in the north west U. S. So what happens is a moist Pacific air mass hits the west coast. Winds begin and a low pressure system forms. If conditions are right the low pressure system can become very large. As it moves eastward the winds will turn and blow toward the east side of the Rockies. The air mass has to rise as it approaches the Rockies. So when air rises and cools moisture drops out of it. That's where we come in and get the big dump of snow.

So this morning there was about 8 cm on the ground. Trees were covered. The temp was about minus 2 C or plus 27 F. Needless to say it was a very beautiful morning.

You just have to look at these kids and you know they're having a ball.

  1. I know there are people who love the snow, but I am not one of them. I lived in Michigan for 5 years and saw enough snow to last this southern gal for the rest of her natural life! However, I do have to admit it is pretty to look at - as long as I don't have to get out in it! Nice photos!

    1. I'm a bit of an instigator here making a big deal of snow. You can tell me to get lost!

  2. I can honestly say I do not miss having snow here. I've outgrown my fondness for the white stuff. It is a pretty sight, but the cold that accompanies it takes away its charm.

    1. Yes we can get to an age where snow isn't fun any more. When my dad was in a nursing home our step mom would bring in snow so he could feel it. She also did the same with fallen leaves.

    2. That's wonderful, Red!

  3. I love snow, whislt it is all white and pristine. We had some just recently here in the UK - and, as usual, it caused problems, we just don't seem able to cope with it! ;)
Following a week of glorious sunshine, it was a bit of a shock but, to be fair, the weahtermen got it right and we knew it was coming.
    Lovely photo's :)

    1. Yes, the dirty grimy snow is not pretty. People who get very little snow have difficulty dealing with it because they are not prepared and have very little experience with it.

  4. Oh heck! You seem to be getting the snow from the NW of the USA and from past experience all you will do is make it even worse and then pass it on to us. Now where is my snow shovel?

    1. Alan, we can't send you snow because we are an extremely arid area. (14 in annual rainfall) But I would admit to sending you a big blast of cold air from time to time. Better than hot air wouldn't you think?

  5. Our moist wet air turned into snow when it hit your area, Red. I think it's lovely, and your pictures are making me smile. I am hoping we are done with snow for the year, but it's still snowing in the High Country! And at Hiawatha House! :-)

    1. Yes , you are the culprits for sending me snow. I was impressed with your last photos and the greenery you show. Of course, your stuff stays green all winter. It just gets healthier looking in the spring.

  6. We (northern Alberta) still have feet of snow and it's been snowing since yesterday again. I appreciate your description of the weather system. You are a good teacher.

    1. I know the feeling. I lived in Inuvik for three years. However your snow will disappear quickly with the coming of the long days. Thanks for visiting Hiawatha House.

  10. I like snow. We get some here, but not much. It's nice and sunny today, but we still have frosty car windows in the morning. Our snow is over for this year, but I'll look forward to next year.

  11. You fortunately have the option of getting into major snow in a short time. The rest of the time you have excellent views of snow.

  12. This is so much fun!
I truly take nature as it goes.
We had a beautiful day, and I worked some more on my bridge onto my island. Wood frogs croaked. Hawks fly by.
Me an' Felix had a grand time!

  14. OMG - "Red"
This snow makes me shiver just looking at the bloody stuff.
Great for the ski slopes, but horrendeous for suburbia, I would think. Driving must be a nightmare? Shovelling the damn stuff a back breaking task? Indoor heating costs, well here in Australia, you would not be able to pay your heating accounts unless you had a string of Swiss Bank accounts to defend on, unbeknown of course to the Canadian Treasury!
Just as well your family on migration from the Ukraine (??) decided on Canada, well if it is the Ukraine, it is cold there also, and not Australia - we have nothing at all like what you show except in the Snowy River alpine skiing areas and that doesn't last all that long.
Very interesting report, but no way with me. I prefer the sunny beaches.
    Cheers

    1. Hey Colin, I wouldn't like your air conditioning bills? There I got ya. Just like you adjusting to the heat we have adjusted to the snow and cold. Cars have a snow tire. We have block heaters(which you've never heard of)for the cars. We've developed snow clearing equipment. When it comes to airplanes we have another system which makes operation successful. Good to hear from you again.

  15. The Easter bunny must have used a sled to deliver the eggs. I would like to see snow like that once, but not every year and certainly not in spring.

    1. The snow pictures were from April 3 so by Sunday most snow was gone except for shady spots and banks from the winter. So yesterday was plus 6 C(38 F).

  16. I read your last post to my husband, who is a board of director for our local Electric Company. He was so impressed with your closing paragraph that he is going to use it at the next meeting (albeit a bit changed to fit his personality)

He said you summed up how he has been feeling for some time. The next meeting is a review of the head of the company...he is bucking for a raise.

Thanks for your very concise words of wisdom!

  19. Yes, I'm reading about the S-word in quite a few blogs, today. I have to admit that it does look lovely but I'd just as soon not have it come visit me for at least 8 months. ;)

  20. Ma Nature is a fickle woman, isn't she!
I noticed on your read in 2012 list, I just finished a PG Wodehouse Jeeves myself, don't you love his turn of phrase? Also done Wind in the Willows and A. Lincoln, by Ronald C. White.

  21. Ya gotta love Ma nature no matter what! You're right the turn of phrase is amazing. I have read many P. G. Wodehouse. I think there's another Wind in the Willows by Willa Cather??? I may be wrong.

  24. Whatdoyoumean? Aussie slang? That, my dear mate, is straight out normal lingo here.
It was simply a minor spelling mistake - pedal and piddle! Thank God I did CAREFULLY read what was about to be sent!
We aim to confuse - ha ha!
Some of our so-called 'slang' expressions, would not pass the Political Correctness mob in overseas countries, especially the USA!
So far we have got away with our "slang", God help anyone who tries to take it away from us.
Now if it is a fine, sunny day for tomorrow (your time), get back on the bike and pedal, or is that piddle?? - ha ha!
Now what happened to the lettuce etc. munching leverets? A most industrious plan that has gone up the sprout!
Great comments and are you sure with your responses that you are not an Aussie in Alberta in disguise????
Today a long range summer weather forecast was given for summer (Dec-Feb) - it will be HOT,HOT, HOT! With cyclones. This delightful news was NOT what I wanted to hear.
    Cheers
    Now back on your bike.
    Colin
