A Rose in the Woods

I went for a short walk in the woods this weekend and found two things I was looking for.

First, I found the Common Wild Rose (Rosa woodsii). This plant grows abundantly around the edges of native habitat. It blooms in early June . These flowers certainly brighten up the woods. Going for a walk can make you very cheerful and hopeful.

The second plant I was looking for was the Yellow lady slipper (Cypripedium calceolus). They grow widely here and appear to like areas of soil that have been disturbed as they like to grow in ditches. The ones I was looking for had been planted in a sanctuary. We took them from an area that was to be developed
Apologies for not having a photograph . I took pictures and when I came home I deleted pictures  that didn't turnout well. Only now did I notice that I deleted all Yellow Lady Slippers.

Blooms are coming quickly now so the next flowers I will make sure that I keep some photos

  3. Oh dear mate!
Well as we advance in years, these things happen. So now you will have to go back and take more photos and be more careful! ( Says he who rarely makes a mistake - joke, joke that one mate!)
Sure is a different kind to the usual garden variety rose!
Great to see that your snow has gone.
    Cheers

PS: Great to see that Daniel Nestor of Canada won the doubles title at Roland Garros and that young Milos Raonic is climbing up the rankings ladder.

  5. Hi Red:
I too, have enjoyed many wild rose bushes down by the river . We have fields of just about everything growing upon my walks.....or in a ditch, or by the side of the road. Once there was a flower that grew in a crack in the pavement of a sidewalk downtown and believe it or not..........everyone walked around the flower. It grew and bloomed and eventually was no more, but every spring it pops to life. I love the lady slippers too and keep those photos next time so you can share them with your friends.
    Have a great day :)

    1. Well, buy yourself a plant book or easier yet take a picture and there's a site that will identify the plant you have.

  9. I've never found any wild roses or ladyslippers so I'm envious.
Deleting the ladyslippers gives you a great reason to go back. :) I always download to my computer first and delete from there before deleting the card.

  12. Red thanks for the update on what's blossoming in the country. I'm heading out to the farm next week and now I know I can expect to see, and smell, the beautiful wild roses. I'm not sure what Lady Slippers are, I'm looking forward to seeing them.

    Have a wonderful weekend, cheers.
