My Last Request

A few days ago I attended a small memorial for Joseph. I first met Joseph more than thirty years ago when his children attended the school I taught in. When I retired and started volunteering at the Nature Center Joseph was working there in maintenance so I got to know him quite well.

The memorial was a simple family run affair. A eulogy was given and prayers read. Prayers ran seamlessly from Christian to aboriginal. I'm cool with that as I've experienced it many times before. Many people told of their experiences with Joseph and you learned much more about him from his family and friends. Many times they referred to Joseph being in heaven to reunite with his parents and some siblings.

Listening to this I began thinking about the place and journey my spirit might take when my life is over. I began to wonder about things. I wondered if my spirit could go to several different places. Could part of my spirit go to heaven and I could be reunited with my parents and little sister? Could part of my spirit be released in the Great Sand Hills where many other spirits roam. Since I like being in the peaks of the Rockies could part of my spirit forever roam among to lofty peaks?  That would be my last request.

I'm not sure if I make this request to those who send me on journey or wait until I get to some other more appropriate place.

Now I don't know what I've achieved with this post. Have I established a new genre of fiction? Have I succeeded in embarrassing myself again?  Have I ostracized myself from my relatives again? How many rigid religious rules have I broken?

Well, am I worried? Of course not! If my readers have not already closed their eyes and put their hands over their ears and gone off to another blog, I will get interpretations guidance and opinions from my followers.  After all, I have to trust my blog  followers.

  1. i, of course, know nothing about what happens to our spirits after we depart from this human form, but i would hope our spirits would be free to be anywhere. :)

    1. Your knowledge is exactly the same as the rest of us.

  2. I'm not sure where our spirits reside when we leave, but I think they're out there somewhere.

  4. Well, you have certainly given this blog follower something to think about :)
I have often wondered about being 'reunited' and, more specifically, how the 'others' would be in the great beyond, if indeed there is one. Would loved ones look like they looked when they departed, that kind of thing... and, could I really cope with all those relations who have gone before?!
I think I like the roaming spirit idea :) Mo

    1. Since I was guilty of making fun of old folks when I was young , I often think how would it be if they could come back and just take a look at us when we are old!

  5. There is nobody like you, Red, and anyone who runs off over this post just doesn't know much about anything! It was a nice rumination over what happens to our souls when we die. Nobody knows that for sure until we get there ourselves. I'm in no hurry and I hope you aren't either. :-)

  6. Wondering what comes after this life is equaled only by wondering about the meaning of life itself. My opinions on these important topics change over time.

  7. I think your request embodies all the beauty of 'religion' vs 'spirituality' and I think your soul will be rewarded with the gifts you have given to this life. I have only begun to read your blog and get to know you - but I am blessed to have this chance in this life. Thank you - your post has made me think.

    1. Thanks for dropping by. I think I'm still the teacher where you had to set things up to get kids to think about things.

  8. Excellent, like the others have said, of course none of us really know, but I hope we are free and
we get to do and learn more things. But like DJAN I'm really not in a hurry to find out.

  9. I too am like Stephan - my thoughts change over time.
So many questions not many answers except a faith for most.
I think everything is so much bigger than we are. Someday perhaps we'll all know.
If I could choose I'd want my spirit to be in different places too. Your thoughts of who do you leave that request with is thought provoking. I need to give that some thought. Maybe that's why some folks opt for cremation - so ashes and spirit can be spread out.
Gosh Red many thoughts to explore as I leave here today. :)

  10. When that sad day does come, your spirit (through your writings) will continue to circulate around the world via your blog posts. Which is a nice thought.

  11. You sound pretty normal to me. Haven't ran into anyone lately who has returned from the other side of death. "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes"... what else can I say? Have a great weekend, my friend!

  13. When our souls fly free they may settle in many different places..mine is going to a sunny spot along a river to play with all the dogs and cats and horses and goats and rabbits that have gone before.
Everyone's heaven may be a little bit different..I have been ready to go for a long time..I am looking forward to being whole and perfect..no aches or pains..sounds like heaven to me:)

  14. Red what will be will be. Funny though that you would bring this topic up, since my Uncle's passing I've had similar thoughts and am right back to where I started before my Uncle passed on.

What will be will be and live my life one day at a time. :-)
