Ghost #6

Ghost # 6 was to honor Keith Mann who was a band leader and music instructor in Red Deer. Keith was extremely active in the local college music program as well as community bands. He was active in local, provincial, national and international professional associations. Music was everything to Keith.

Now Keith was a very energetic and active person. I'm disappointed with this statue as it doesn't get at the key part of Keith.

Sadly Keith was killed in a motor cycle accident. He was a great loss to music and our community.

The statue is called Let the Music Begin

Ready for the music to start.

Looking to see that everybody was ready.

  1. I have done some back-tracking to catch up with the ghosts after my holiday. What a splendidly inventive way to record important local characters and, at the same time, brighten up the streets of your town.

    1. They are interesting but sadly there's too little walking and drive by viewing doesn't cut it. I have to admit that I don't stop and look at these very often.

  4. Obviously not knowing the person it's difficult to comment on how good it is but it doesn't really portray the energy that you describe.

    1. Keith was a guy with ego and swagger although not in any way obnoxious. He was immensely proud of his students and what they achieved.

  5. I think it conveys he lived life with open arms and definitely calls to his love of music it seems :) Now you have me curious as to the key part that was left out. ?

    1. Keith was a guy with some ego , swagger and pizzazz. He [put body English on stuff. He was very likable and popular. He was a very able leader. I don't think this came out in the statue or at least I can't see it.

    2. Yes after you explain it that way I can see how a statue might not be able to convey all that. You however ,Red , did a great job explaining it . I see what you mean now.

  6. Even though the statue might not have captured the essence, you have, Red. I know nothing of the man but now feel moved by him. Thank you.

    1. Yes, he certainly did influence many people. I volunteered at the local Arts Center and watched many concerts that he lead.

  7. Sadly, I find that most statues do not seem to capture the person as we know them ourselves. I have on occasion seen such a statue like The Gorman Skater in Kings Square in Saint John NB. I remember my Mom saying that it looked just like him and she used to skate with him. Nice photos Red.

    1. I'm not big on likeness but an artist should be able to get the character through shape etc.

    1. The guys music talent was awesome but most of these statues were done by local artists.

    1. I must say that the pictures are terrible as I went around in one noon hour and this one was facing directly into the sun. And as you know...I have limited patience for some things.

  13. I agree with DJan although the stature doesn't do the man any good you have! Another great ghost!

  14. Red it would be interesting to see a statue of someone I actually knew, I'm sure that it would be difficult to capture someone's essence and with your description of this man I can see how difficult it would be.

    1. Yes, I'm looking for essence rather than his exact likeness. I photo would give me his appearance. With his arms out he displays leadership.

    1. yes, that was the idea. He had a baton but it was stolen twice so now he doesn't wave his baton.

    1. Well, get to work and publicize yourself and get somebody to push the idea! I'd vote for you!

  17. I too questioned the absense of a baton. I would have thought it would have been incorporated into the statue and not easily removed. Without it the statue loses some a basic element of the man.
If as you suggest he put body English into stuff and had swagger and pizzazz then perhaps the statue should be a little more animated as well.
