A Fine Pile of Ceramic Tile

This sculpture was placed on one of our main streets with a fair bit of fanfare. The newspaper had photos and a description of this piece. When I drove by it I could not see what the newspaper article had described. I walked by this statue a few times and it still didn't make sense. When I was photographing I could see what was represented but it wasn't until looking at my photo the it really jumped out at me.

Now I could ask you to say what the figure is but it's rather obvious.

So we have a large ceramic bunny on one of our streets supposedly to make little kids happy. I've never seen any little kids near this sculpture. Maybe it should have been placed in a park instead of a street corner.

This is a piece that the more I look at it the better I like it.

He's got his eye right on me.

  3. Wall murals and now sculptures.
Your city is to be commended, Deer City, Alberta.
The rail station up the line - next station here in Brisbane - has murals of what the area was like way back in the 1920's. I am delighted to report these incredible murals have not been "defaced" by vandals.
Miracles can happen. Graffiti here is rampart and seemingly uncontrollable, but you can't have police everywhere.
Great blog report as always, helps me as you know.
    Cheers

    1. These have not been sprayed. Most are in very visible areas. In the winter a scarf is placed on Leonard Gaetz.

  4. It's a rabbit.
I wonder why they decided on a rabbit.

    1. Now you ask a question like that and make me curious so I will have to research it.

  5. I rather like that. It's clever and it makes you pause on your way through life : which is two of the main ingredients of public sculpture.

    1. This artist is local and very prolific. He likes to work with ceramic tile. All of these tiles are planned and fired before making the piece.

  7. Well, I saw the bunny right away and had to show my friend next door. She collects bunnies. She is now wondering how to get that bunny into her yard, where her grandchildren would enjoy it for many hours. NEAT post and photo Red.

  10. Love it! When your blog first opened I didn't see the 'bunny' so I had to look at it a minute and then started reading. Great way to use the bricks. If it was intended for kids I think a park would have been a better choice but it's neat.

    1. I would rather see it where kids could pet it, hug it and climb over it.

    2. I'b be afraid they would fall off and hurt themselves! I think I liked your other statues more! A bunny, indeed~

  11. I think it's cute but I agree with you in regards to the location. I can see how you would have to stand back and take a look from afar to see what this is, I'd probably just walked right on by not even noticing that it's a rabbit.

    Have a great day Red!

    1. I think people do walk by. it was described in the paper once so many people would not know about it.

    2. If the town dressed this up at Easter it might become a landmark.

  12. Now that's the biggest bunny I've seen. I guess it makes a statement but from my perspective would look better in a park.

  15. I find the sculpture and your photo very impressive. You are right it would have made more sense to place it place where children hang out.

  17. He is definitely looking right at you. I don't know, I think it's kind of cute. I haven't read the article, so I'm not sure what the intention was - but I kind of like it.

  18. I didn't want to read too much of the link. Red Deer is an artsy place! I like this Rabbit but he looks like he belongs in a park in some grass:)
