I Part Company With a Long Time Friend

Until yesterday I owned a 1978 Chev Impala. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I owned a 38 year old car. But yesterday I parted with my old friend.

I hid the rust!
Why did I keep a car for 38 years?  It was not by design. It just happened.

I had a utility trailer that I used to haul items too large to go in the car. The old car had the hitch and just stuck around for the little job of pulling the trailer.

Now my old "green machine" had more noble things to  do in the past than just haul an old run down utility  trailer. It was a family car. We went for family trips and holidays. We had a holiday trailer that was used for travel.(made one trip to California) Does anybody remember holiday trailers? They were before truck campers, motor homes and 5th wheels. You pulled them with a station wagon! There were many good times with the green machine. I once picked up my son and three friends from a movie. I thought it was strange that four thirteen year olds all wanted to sit in the back and leave me alone in the front. I might have known. All of a sudden WWF broke out on the back seat. I thought the car was going to be out of control before the wrestling bout ended. I thought the car interior would be trashed. Kids learned to drive in the old car. Just think of how many tons of groceries this old chevy carried over the years.

However, there comes a time when things have to move on. Yesterday some kid came and bought his first car. I hope it runs well for the short time he will use it.

    1. It was a very average model so there was no value in restoring it. It did have a 350 engine which car people wee interested in.

    1. No problems saying good bye. Now I might have trouble parting with a horse or some cows.

    1. I hope the kid gets some use out of it. It wasn't being used here. I had to keep insurance on it.

  9. My husband watches car auctions on TV and sometimes I just have to watch. I can tell you your green machine was a classic for sure.

    1. The green machine was just a regular car. Nothing special that would attract car people.

  11. Wow, that is really a car, we call them "old americans" here but you don't see them here anymore only with collectors. I like those oldies, they are so big, sad you had to say goodbye.

    1. Nope! it was a plane Jane machine. If it had been a fancy model well then it may have been worth something.

  18. Wow, Red this is an amazing story, one which touched my heart. What a perfect way to part with the car though I must say, the young fella is now going to go out and create his own memories with the green machine.

    1. It was a boat. It's not as safe as cars now and was a gas guzzler.

  20. 38 year old cars are almost considered new in New Zealand. Old cars just seem to carry on for ever here.

  22. Well it was worth the money you paid for it, and now you got a little grocery money out of it! I am sure the young man was just thrilled! I had a 1984 Ford Bronco II that I bought used in 1987. I cried when it left the yard in 2005 Old friends we were, I knew all her ins and outs and what she needed, they don't make vehicles like that anymore...and all those years without payments was fantastic! :)
