My Winter is Still Very Healthy

I have noticed that a few bloggers are talking about spring. Some places it's warming up and green grass is making an appearance. Others report moderating temperatures. And some bloggers are extremely tired of winter and just plain fed up. You can pick your category.

We have had a long and brutal winter. Our winter started in early November with heavy snow. (60 cm). December brought more snow 50 cm (36 in) and cold temperatures. We had a beak in January and had a thaw and long mild spell. February has just been one long cold spell with no break in sight. Yes sir, not even a hint of spring here.

     Today we had a daytime temperature of minus 20 C (-7 F)with a northeast wind of 20 kmh. This evening it is minus 26 C ( -15 F) with a wind chill of minus 37C (-23 F) . Our low tonight will be minus 38 C (-24 F)  with a windchill of minus 52 C (- 33 F). High tomorrow will be minus 25.

The record low for this date is minus 35 C (- 23 F) set in 1962 and the record high was plus 14 C (+9 F) set in 1986.

On the positive side the sun rises at 7:23 AM tomorrow and sets at 6:13 PM. We get 10 hours and 50 minutes of sun tomorrow.

So winter still has a strong icy grasp on us right now. The seven day forecast doesn't show much relief.

So we just have to sit tight knowing that spring will definitely come and be most welcome.

On the other hand there is something worse than the weather. I spent 6 hours in the mall shopping with my micro manager and that wasn't fun! Also one of my brothers is sitting in Phoenix and laughing his head off!!

So to the people getting spring enjoy it. I appreciate your photos as it keeps me hopeful about spring.

Does the weather bother you or do you roll with the punches?

  1. Red I'm going to run away from Alberta til Spring arrives, this is blasted freezing cold! K back to reality, I'm grateful to have a remote start for my car, I'm grateful to have heat coming into my home and I'm extremely grateful my bed is warming up right now with my electric blanket. I don't care for this brutal cold but what can we do about it? Complaining isn't making Spring get here any quicker.

Shopping, now that sounds like a fun day! ;-) Have a wonderful weekend and stay warm!

  3. Red, it's been very mild in the valley this winter. -3C this morning but it is dry and cool.
I would have preferred a bit more snow.

  4. After looking at your temps and snowfall and considering the major storm coming my way this Sunday and Monday of 17 degrees and five inches I think I'll just roll with the punches and make no complaints. :)

    1. Complaining won't hurt the weather. Complaining might make us feel better but then maybe not!

  5. Sorry to hear your winter still is there. Can't help it but we have a spring feeling already, six weeks earlier than normal.
We didn't had a winter at all, no snow, no frost. I must admit I don't like that, it feels I missed something, a season. I always like the four seasons we have here and now we are gliding smooth from autumn to spring...
Well I think your time will come too soon.

  8. I am terrified of global warming and our ignorance. This has been the warmest winter on the planet in almost forever!

    1. We should all be terrified of global warming. It's real. It's here and it's been here a while.

  10. We had three days or so of beautiful sunshine, and now the rain/snow mix and wind have returned. But yesterday I saw crocus in bloom! Right here. Got to see if my picture of them turned out well enough to use to cheer you up. :-)

  11. We'll there's certainly no spring here! But I do like the sunshine when it comes, higher in the sky, longer days, and a tiny hint of warmth. I love winter, but just not those -20 or worse days with a wind, snow squalls and wind chill! We've had too many of those this year.

  12. we had another hard freeze 2 nights ago in texas (23F) then into the 70s for a couple of days - tomorrow night back into the 20s and staying cold for the next week. it's the up/down stuff that gets hard to take. although i'd still prefer that to your constant HARD freeze!

    1. Since you're not used to the hard freeze it's a bit of a challenge for you. It's all relative.

  13. We just roll with the punches. Weather is one thing ya can't change. It was minus 23 F here this morning, and we're supposed to have wind as well. We'll just stay inside.

    1. Roll with the punches is all we can do. Things will warm up quickly when it happens. A good old Chinook would really change things.

  14. I'm afraid I am one who lets the weather bother me. If it is gray and dreary, I feel gray and dreary. Let the sun come out and I am happy with everything! :)

  15. I like winter but in NC winter can be cold or warm never know. I have enjoyed the little bit of snow we got this year though. I am ready for spring so that we can get out and plant and work in the yard.

  16. I just returned from Thailand where it was humid and over a hundred degrees every day. Now that I'm back in Oregon I'm having difficulty with the cold, and I'm practically never cold. I'm one of those people desperately awaiting Spring.

  17. As you know, you send all your weather our way. Tonight it will be -25F, it is very cold out now but the sun is shining..so looks are decieving! We get 11 hours and six minutes of daylight...we are just 16 minutes behind you 6:58 AM to 6:04 PM ..so that is making progress and we will really notice it next weekend with the time change. Soon Chance can go for his after supper rides again!!
I am staying busy and trying to stay cheerful in the deep freeze:)

  18. I'm rolling, Red!
You are right, many are posting cheerful photos of spring. It is hopeful.
Mind you, as I posted on Facebook, I've seen spring arrive 56 times, there is no reason why I shouldn't see it the 57th, barring unforeseen circumstances!
You have had some cold out west. We're at 0 C. today, but it's going down to -20 or so. Patience...

  19. Gotta roll with the punches. Pretty soon we will be complaining that it's too hot! Lol! We've had wind. Bitter cold north wind. But if you bundle up, you stay warm. It's the animals that I worry about.

  20. Ours has been very similar to yours and I'm not minding it this year.. in the new place. It's the first time I've had deer come to my door and the first time I've had beautiful winter sunrises over a lake. How could I complain about that?
