Behind in Music

I seem to be listening to music 20 or thirty years after it comes out and is popular.

I like music. To be more exact, I like listening to music. I am not a musician. I listen to a wide variety of music. It would be easier to say what I don't listen to. I have only one problem and that is not enough time to listen to all the music I like.

Now it always seems that I am years behind on the music scene. I've never heard Justin Bieber, the Dixie Chicks or 101 other modern groups. I have heard the Spice girls but they are an old group. I don't listen to rap so that makes many artists I've never heard of.

I guess I find some music that I really like and enjoy. So I don't pickup on any new music.

It goes like this. when Elvis hit the scene. I was listening to Pat Boone, Perry Como, Country and Western and Folk music. I did pick up on Elvis and all the 50's rockers fairly soon after they hit the big time. The Beatles were out for some time before I began listening to their music. It took me a long time before I listened to Neil Diamond, Bruce Springstien, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dillon and many more.

Along the way, I discovered   Blues music. In Blues there is a huge variety of different classes. I also made an acquaintance with jazz. All this time I listened to classical music. For each of these I found that there were always sources that provided interesting information on the music. Radio stations I listen to not only play the music but talk about it.

I suppose that I was discovering so much music that I didn't have time to listen to new music that was coming out.

However, I have been able to find more than enough music that provides listening pleasure.

How about you? Are you years behind in listening to new music? What's your favorite type of music? What has been some of the best groups you've listened to?

  1. Morning Red - I love music and am always searching for new and old - I love it all, however have different tastes, not so much into rap but can rap (hehe) - I did make up a rap song because we had a party one night at the Fire Hall and anyone could sing. Well, it was a hoot and the kids loved it. Imagine, this olde dol rappin' - I rcvd a lot of laughter, clapping n cheering and NO, I didn't have a drink in me. I just like to entertain and like to try new stuff. I love the classical end, Blues, Rock n Roll, some country and Justin Bieber shoulda never sung - I love to give the young a try and if I like their voice, well then, I have a new voice to follow. The first time I heard "Celine" sing, I was hooked and some of my favs are Enya, Eva Cassidy, Indigo Girls, Jan Arden, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Andre Bocelli, Billie Holiday, Roy Orbison, Sarah Brightman, Maroon 5, Rascal Flatts, and of course "Susan Boyle" n Paul Potts - this a handful or so that I listen to, but there are more. This was a great post Red - thankyou ....just remembering a bunch more. ha,ha

    1. It's always tough to list favorites in a small place. I like to listen to Randy Bachman on CBC Sat nights from 7 - 9 . He plays great tunes and has lots of info.

  2. Red, I can play a bit but always badly. I enjoy performing. I really get a kick from the attention. I don't object to folk throwing things to shut me up.
Bob Dillon, the Stones were good Dire Straits brilliant. I was never an Elvis fan and regarded the Spice Girls as soft porn. Mumford and Sons are okay and only a few years old.

  6. I don't listen to music too often either. I used to like Country Western when it was still "Country-Western". Now it sounds more like pop music. We both like "The National Park Series" music. Just nice easy listening instrumental music, no singing to speak of. (From Orange Tree Productions).

  8. My preference would be the "Oldies" radio stations. Pop and Country and Western appeal; but then I like most anything that you can understand the words. Too much of today's music you have to strain your eyes to understand. Most of the artists you listed I enjoy as well. I miss the Dixie Chicks. Recently I've been enjoying a rerelease of the Beatles White Album. Music is in my life every day. It soothes the savage beast when needed.

  9. I'm pretty much where Tabor is. My old music from my youth, my kids music from their youth, no rap, nothing very modern. But now my granddaughter is asking for a few songs to be put on my ipod for her own special list. Maybe there's hope for me.

  10. Like you I don't get around to listening to as much music as I like but there's one song out right now that's absolutely infectious--"Happy" by Pharrell Williams. Give it a chance and see if your toes start tapping.

  12. I listen to music much of the time. What I listen to depends entirely on my mood. At the moment it's Boccherini but it's more likely to be a later romantic period composer. I'm with Adrian on Dire Staits and Mark Knopfler but then there's Laura Branigan or the Cowboy Junkies or Garth Brooks or...the list is endless.

  13. Red I have such a wide variety of music I listen to, all the way from old twangy country, to Aboriginal Australian music, old rock and roll, newer old rock and roll but I'm not up to date on what the newest rock and roll is or if it's even still out there or has that all turned into rap? I don't listen to rap, makes no sense to me. I like classical music on occasion as I do meditation music when I want to kick back and relax. When I'm driving by myself down the highway I plug in my iPod, which has a variety of lively music and turn it up as loud as it can go and I sing and I drive and I drive and I sing. Life is like that sometimes I can't get enough of my music.

  14. Even though you find yourself listening to older music, you are able to listen to only the music that YOU want to hear and that is a very recent development. So you are with the times even if you're not!

  15. I really like all kinds of music, from country to rap to every single thing in between. There is beauty in every kind of music. I read once that "music is what feelings sound like" and I love that thought and that quote.

  16. I enjoy music. I enjoy the oldies for starts. The Bee Gee's my fav but the bother is only one left. Poor Barry cannot hold a note now. he needs to go spend his millions of millions. His niece can't hold a note he sings with.
Neil Diamond only his oldies. His voice is gone. I still adore Kenny Rogers singing the oldie with Dolly. My son got me on Dillon. Then I heard this young man when I was dusting one day. I fell in love with his voice singing of the Canada song commercial. I was telling my friend. She said that is my Grandson Justin Hines. I said your kidding. I told my friends. They said his voice brought them all from every part of their rooms. That was three years ago. Now Justin Hines has been all over the world. I have him up in my blog in a wheelchair as he is disabled but oh what a voice his slow slow songs. My daughter got her picture taken with him. I have it up in my blog. I heard him sing sing at 10. So his dream came true. I do not like rap. The country too gone down the drain with rock country. .
They are trying to do Biber movements . Biber he blew it. He is a train wreck. Stay home. He let fame go to his head so he is a loser now.
The Grand kids choices well I wont go there. Some is not bad but some of the selective artist. Hmmmm

  17. I think we followed pretty much the same pattern. Though when I stopped watching TV in the nineties my taste for "new" music also went don the tube. Perhaps "rap" had a lot to do with that...
