1000 Kilometers!

     As most of you know, my goal is to ride  my bike minimum of 1000 km (625 mi) per summer. Today I reached that magic number. In fact, when I got home today it was 1001.97  kms. 

     What am I going to do now? Quit? Never! I will continue riding until the weather shuts me down. I hope to ride at least another 100 km. One year I even made one ride in early December.

     Making my goal this year was a bit of a challenge. We had a lot of cold and wet weather. You always think it will get better so you wait . I got very little distance ridden in April, May, June and July. We had a perfect August so I rode about 500 km . I had a problem with a leg muscle so for a while riding was a challenge.

This old bike has rolled 9000 km (5625 mi)

    So I'll ride until snow, ice and low temperatures stop me. Then I will think about riding next year.

  5. That is amazing! Good for you. I rediscovered cycling this summer and I love it! I will also ride until the weather forces me to stop. And get right back to riding in early spring.

  6. Wow! Congratulations! That's fabulous! My husband had high hopes to continue his biking when we moved to Hawaii, but there are too many steep hills where we live. I can see how you stay so fit.

  9. I had one speedometer that only went to 10,000 and then quit on me. A nice goal, I was riding until December last year.

  10. Red maybe you have to realize you may be not a fixer upper guy but your a older guy who has allot of zest in what you like doing. Riding your bike miles. Do what your heart tells you as it is what your passion is. Good for you.I applaud you. Happy Sunday.

    1. The thing about cycling is that it's not a complete work out. Cycling is really risky at my age. A fall would be disaster.

  13. I exercised with my Uncle one year and he was and he rode a bike everyday. I told him I wanted to try riding a short ride with him one day. I made it 8 miles but I never rode again. It was to nerve wracking to me.

  14. Make sure you ride safely. Nothing stops a good exercise program than a crash or pulled muscle. You have good determination. What is your plan for winter?

  17. Congratulations Red! I rode to school and college and for the first two years after starting work for nearly 13 years for forty minutes every day. Sure a great way to stay fit and in shape :) Miss riding my bike. No opportunity where I live.

  18. Amazing how much you cycle. For the dutch a bicycle is mostly a regular way of transport. So most people cycle every day, but not that much of kilometres you do I suppose.We sometimes make a tour, but mostly we cycle around in the neigbourhood for shopping, or to the market or visiting friends etc.

    1. I think many Dutch would easily do this distance in a year. We need more security here to leave bikes at shopping centers.

  21. Excellent, Red! You set a goal and made it. And such a healthy goal. I'm glad you enjoy biking and don't plan to quit. I didn't go biking at all this past summer, and it sure was my loss.

  22. You are inspiring! I wrecked my achiliies overdoing it on the bike and haven't been back on it since. It's been 2 years. sigh. Maybe I should!
    Although, with the size of my butt, maybe it's not so pretty a sight!

  23. I rarely ride my real bike in the Hebrides but in the days when I used to ride in NZ it would be a standard 26k before breakfast. I miss that.
