My Favorite Jacket

I have a very favorite leather jacket. I bought it at least 30 years ago and over  the years I  wore it more and more until it's become hard to take it off me. Well, I don't mean I wear it to bed or anything. If it's fall or spring and I'm going anywhere, I liked to wear my gray leather jacket.

Note the waste and shoulder where the color is gone. Now it did make me look like a had a big paunch!

After a few years of wearing the jacket it became very comfortable. It just felt right in every way. It was light. The pockets were in exactly the right place. Nobody else had a gray leather jacket. It was all mine. I didn't pay attention to how it coordinated with other clothes I was wearing. That jacket just had to go with me.

Now the last five years this jacket has been past it's prime. The gray dye has left it in many places so that the uncolored leather is showing through. I knew that the leather around one pocket was torn a little bit. This fall when I wore the jacket I noticed that the small tear had become quite large. The leather had just aged so that it was coming apart on it's own. The micro manager decided to sew it up if I didn't wear the jacket out any place. She also discovered some seams that had come apart. So, all in all, it looked pretty bad for my favorite jacket.

So the old gray leather jacket will be down graded to being worn where I'm not likely to see anybody.

So do you get attached to things like the jacket that I wore for a long long time?

  1. I get attached to pullovers. They have to be all wool. I never get attached to synthetic materials.

    1. I wore polyester shirts all the time I was teaching. I didn't know how uncomfortable they were until I retired and started wearing T shirts.

  2. I have this old black zipped sweater. It feels comforting to wear it...much like toting around a security blanket.

    1. Ooh that reminds me of an old sweater I had. The kids called me Mr Rogers.

  3. I know this feeling! I do have some articles of clothing that I love, and I wear them over and over until they start to fade away. When you have something that fits just right, you can't help but become a little obsessed with it.

  5. Neat story about your grey leather jacket. I had a jean jacket that my big brother gave me a long time ago. I wore it with jeans and just about everything else. Denim never seems to wear out. I have been attached to some jackets, however; my black leather jacket has a similar rounded collar like yours and that is my fav. I did have the lining replaced inside the right pocket and it still is in good shape. You talk about the neatest things Red. Have a great day.

  6. It suits you very well and you can still wearing it around the house doing your garden work. I have a husband who likes to buy old leather jackets, the older the better. I gave up critise him but walk ten steps behind him in town.....

  7. You're so fun! You keep yourself in good shape for it to fit all this time. Good on you!
Did you see the new muskrat architecture? I was looking for your opinion. Looks like a pile of mud in the middle of the pond.

    1. I went back and checked your posts. I saw the post and read about your health but didn't comment on the muskrat house. You have a comment now.

  8. I've got a pair of old pants that I've had for ages. I don't get rid of them just because they've got a few holes. But like you, I don't wear them out in public any more. :-)

    1. Good one. Many times our closets get full of out dated thinks. I have a number of good coats but they are out of style.

  10. I thought the idea was a leather jacket couldn't look really cool until it showed wear.
Then again, having the pockets falling off might be a bit too worn.

    1. I agree . the cool look is being a little worn. It's just my style.

  11. I surely do. And because "comfort" is my standard of clothing sophistication and style my Public Image Coordinator complains loudly whenever I wear anything she describes as "worn and ratty."

  12. That's a cool story. I have my favorites that I always go to as well. As in a denim shirt I'd wear over t-shirts - the shoulders finally completely wore through!

  14. There are leather restorers that can probably restore your jacket. I don't recall seeing a gray mens leather jacket before.

  17. My weakness is coat's. Hubby said the other day why so many coat's.hanging in the closet. I say truly coats can be a friend . Coats when you put weight on. Coats when your slim fit. like who is going to waer fat coates when at swift stores. Most I see is slim ladies in my town.

I have loss so now I can get in to the smaller coat . Ihave won for the yard. I bet it is so ld but not a rip in it. It is the warmest coat. I still cant part with it. It is big but has a draw string to tighten me up. Would I wear it to town. Not really. I live in the country and Not anyone dress's posh. My friends say I do in town. Well I tell them that is me. My daughter is the same. Not that I want attraction. Around the house I am really laid back. jeans or sweat pants and not any make up unless I have company then yes I dress up. ..They know that my friends but they love to tease me. Ha-ha. Thrift stores have really pretty cool things not like way back I am told in clothes. I buy my art supplies mostly. Like material.

  18. You look very handsome in your leather jacket, Red. Why not see if you can get it restored or find another one like it from the same manufacturer?

I have kept a t-shirt which meant a lot to me from my early twenties. It's so worn out that I can't even wear it to sleep in anymore but I still haven't thrown it away.

  19. I had a Harris Tweed jacket once upon a time that I wore until it fell to pieces but then I found a similar one. Ironically I hardly ever wear it.

  20. Rummaging through the hall closet this morning, I came across a scarf (MacLeod of Lewis hunting tartan) that I bought about 53 years ago when I was in high school. I still wear it on the rare cold day here in northeast Arkansas.
