Something I Won't Wear

Now we all have closets full of clothes that we won't wear or haven't worn for a long time. I have a perfectly good leather winter coat that I don't wear. It was in style in the 70's and then went out of style. I don't wear ties anymore but I have many ties and I probably wouldn't wear any of them. I bought a new tie for my daughter's wedding. I have dress shoes that I never wear as I don't go to things that are formal. We also tend to dress down and don't wear more formal clothes. We don't wear shirts ties and jackets to memorials any more.

In a recent post I wrote about a favorite leather jacket that I really liked wearing but it is long past it's best before date.

Today I found something that I won't wear. I'm not wearing it because I don't like it or any other reason not to wear it (like it's too small). It's a tee shirt that has special meaning and I want to keep it. One year our art teacher did a caricature of all staff and silk screened it on to tee shirts. We were given the shirts at the end of the year. The artist is a great friend and I wanted some of his art. It was a great way to remember the staff of that year. So this tee shirt is too sentimental for me to wear.

A little tight around the middle!

I found it difficult to get these to show up on the shirt so that you could see the artist's work.

So do you have clothes you don't wear?

    1. I wonder how many of us kept those tee shirts. Thanks for dropping in to visit Hiawatha House.

  4. Your Tee is definitely a "keeper" & I can see why it has a great deal of sentimental value to you. I have made tee-shirt quilts in the past for people with tees like yours. I've also seen tees like your stretched & framed when the owner wants the artwork preserved & or wants it out for viewing and doesn't plan to wear the shirt. I am probably like a lot of people and wear about 10% of my clothing on a regular basis and the rest of it is lucky to be worn once or twice a year. Once I retired and did not have to dress up every day, I found I got along fine with a few casual clothing basics. I'm surprised your leather coat has not come back in style a couple of times over the years. I notice that some of the older well made clothing I have held onto usually becomes popular again every decade or so with minor updates. I hear vintage clothing stores love getting leather coats because they get bought up quickly. It makes me feel old to know some of the clothing I have kept is "vintage". and I'm still in my 50s.

When I was a kid I collected tee-shirts because my Dad traveled a lot and he always brought me a shirt for my collection. I had lots of Super Bowl Champ shirts, colleges, diners, bowling alleys, etc.. I finally donated them all, except one, when I lost interest in them as a young adult. I did hang on to one and that was a football jersey my Dad brought me from Kent State a few days before the shooting by the Nat'l Guard that killed 4 students back in 1970. I remember watching the horror of the massacre on TV when I was 12 yrs. old. I think of the shirt as a reminder of that tragedy.

    1. I'm somewhat disorganized so I would never frame anything but I know where it's kept. The leather winter coat...yes they sort of come back but with a number of differences that work make the old coat stick out as past the best before date. Thanks for visiting Hiawatha House.

  5. The art teacher sure chose the right career. :)
    A great shirt!
I have many clothes I don't wear. Some for the same reason as you - no formal functions (never did like them), memorials here aren't so dressy any more either, and mainly I just love my t-shirt and jeans. Hubby and I have talked about paring down the closet but just haven't done it. I have a big box of t-shirts my two kids wore in there teenage years. Always thought I'd make a blanket out of those.

    1. I have a lot of clothes here that haven't been worn for a long time and probably never will be worn. It's time for me to use some common sense and get rid of some of this stuff.

  6. Like you I don't wear ties any more, now the Harris Tweed jackets I have. Fortunately I kept many of my roll neck sweaters that I haven't worn since I started spending my Northern Hemisphere winters in New Zealand. Now that I shall be spending a winter for the first time in 9 years I shall be wearing them again.

    1. So it was lucky you kept the sweaters. Nothing more comfortable than a good wool sweater.

  7. What a nice keepsake - You know, some people that have fav T-shirts use them as the top for a blanket. I had a bunch from the Athletic Field I was in for 25 years and Mom had a blanket made for me from them. The art looks quite fine for what I could see and I think you are third row up from bottom on far left....maybe I am wrong, maybe not. And yes, Red, I do have some T-shirts that I do not wear and have them saved in a drawer, which my niece has put in a claim for when I am ready to give her. ha,ha

    1. Sports people tend to have more shirts that are very sentimental. I am third row from the top and the far right!

  10. That is a really great t-shirt! No wonder you want to keep it.

I'm a minimalist, so I barely keep things I don't use. Most of the clothing I don't wear gets donated. My wardrobe is very small, and most of the items in it are used often.

  12. I LOVE that shirt Red. I do not dress up too much I am a simple farm girl who likes comfort but do like to wear a hat for some reason. My Grandfather always wore a tie. He was a painter and wore it under his coveralls I loved that about him. He was always so neat. Hug B

    1. I might be biased but nothing beats us farm kids. My Grandpa always wore a tie and he spent much of the summer in his garden.

  13. If I don't wear it for a year, it is gone. I do have a football jersey with my name and number on it from too long ago.

  14. Oh, yes, Red, a closet full. I tend to wear the same things over and over because I like them, and leave the others for some time in the future. Once every five years or so I cull the ones I definitely won't wear again. But I have a tweed jacket that belonged to my father that I would never part with, even though my mother made it into a jacket that would fit her, and me as well. It's too sentimental for me to wear. :-)

    1. We got rid of a lot of stuff this spring when we did a major housecleaning. I won't get rid of my Dad's cane or a sweater my Mom knit for me.

  15. That's a really neat shirt Red, you look great in it. I would want to keep it forever. I was just thinking about your question, I need to throw a lot of stuff out as I haven't worn a lot of clothes in a whole lot longer than a year. The only things I have that I could never part with is two tweed flat caps that belonged to my Dad, and one he gave to our son. They stay side by side and are covered to stop the moths from getting in.

  17. I have purged clothes several times since I retired and thus 85% of the stuff in my closet gets worn regularly. Since we do keep handmade items I can understand the importance of keeping stuff in pristine condition. Perhaps you should put it in a keepsake box.

    1. I haven't purged nearly enough stuff. Fortunately I'm not a big keepsake guy so you see that this tee shirt is special.

  20. I love the tee shirt! I have a closet full of clothes that I don't wear. I can't decide what style I like! At my age and I still don't know. I sure know the styles I don't like though! :)

  21. Cool! your shirt . My son is an artist and his first shirt he did me was airbrushed at 16. (Elvis) Last year I wore it. This year is a tad snug. That is me. Like a yo,yo in weight. Grrrr.

He id it in black and white. He entered it in a contest if your remember the sunshine girl. Well men do glance at them but my sons Elvis shirt she held up. It was to go into a contest. Never go there but the world saw it after looking at her first. Hunk. An artist always knows his art. So he phoned the net work and they did apologize and gave him something. No not the sunshine girl.
