Oh How I Miss My Microwave...

It's funny how much we miss something once it's gone.

A few days ago someone wondered what it would be like if we suddenly didn't have the Internet. What would we miss? How would we handle it?

Well, today I had to drop my microwave off for some repairs. I dropped it off in the morning and would be able to pick it up in the afternoon.

Everything was fine until I went to start my lunch. How do I cook my soup? It took me a minute to think, "Oh ya! In a pot on the stove." I'm used to making one pot of coffee in the morning and when I want a cup of coffee I heat it in the micro wave. What happened before? Did I not drink coffee? Oh yes! We had instant coffee! Anytime you wanted coffee you boiled the kettle and made a cup of instant coffee. I even had instant coffee for breakfast. I had instant coffee at school!

So today I suffered a little when I had to do without my micro wave. I missed it in so many ways.

Now the repair turned into a nightmare. As soon as I saw the micro wave I could see marks on the glass part of the door. The marks wouldn't come off. The only thing they knew is that it wasn't scratched. Yes , they would replace the door. They sent me home with my micro wave to wait for a new door. Then I found the same marks on the side. I couldn't get them off either.

Now since I had a chance to take a close look at it, I don't think they replaced the door parts they were supposed to replace. But how do I know? I think they just greased the latches.

So I got a double dose today as I couldn't use my micro wave and had a miserable experience with the repair.

    Wish me better luck tomorrow.

  1. Gosh, microwaves are so cheap now I'm wondering why you didn't just buy a new one. Mine didn't seem to be doing the job as well as it did before, so I bought one for around $100 that works just fine. :-)

  2. I would be lost without a microwave, too. And boy, would I miss the Internet!
I think you need to ask for a full accounting of what actual repair they did.

    1. They've heard. I should have made it clear that this was on warrantee.

  3. Aggravation, Red! I'm so sorry. I agree with DJan though. I would just go out and buy a new one. No Internet? Shudddddder.....

  4. The last time mine went all funny I just bought a new one it was cheaper than repairs...kinda disgusting that we are a throw away society. I only use the microwave to heat stuff up and to defrost meat...oh and my corn bag gets warmed up in in every night...three minutes...I would really miss that warmth:)

  5. I suspect that for the equivalent of £50.00p you could have a new one with grill. I changed mine eighteen months ago and it works a treat. It's also much quicker than the old one.

    1. Yes, they're fairly inexpensive here but this one was still on warrantee.

  6. In this country we do not repair things. We take them to the dump. It save a lot of time and doesn't cost much more than the repair. ;-)

  7. We get used to these things and when they're not around, we truly have trouble adjusting. Microwaves are very inexpensive, so I'm very surprised you'd want to spend money on repairing this one rather than picking up a new one.

  8. I agree with DJan, I would just toss it and go buy a new one, for they are quite inexpensive to buy. Repairs now cost almost more than the microwave is worth, especially with the unsatisfactory work you seem to have gotten. I would not be happy with the marks?? I hope you have not paid the guy yet.

  9. Good luck tomorrow! Hubby dinted the car in a wind that grabbed it and it looks like $800 for a 3-day repair. Plus a car rental on top of that. It's so sad... He was delivering meals on Wheels.

    1. That's what you call a freak accident. Some wind. The tail light on mine was $365 .

  10. A nice thing to have. When I go camp for a few weeks, I take mine along. One year a kid looked in my tent and went and told his mom he wanted to go over and watch my TV.

    1. Now that's going some to have a tent with a micro wave. All the big motor homes have micro waves.

  11. i'm kind of surprised you attempted a repair, too, but maybe if it was just door latch parts... sorry for the trouble you had there! (and with getting a comment box to come up, too!)

  12. I would be unhappy with that repair job. I just use the microwave if I want to heat up some extra pizza, or if I need a heating pad warmed up.

    1. This was on warrantee. You really don't make much use of your micro wave.

  14. The first time I saw a microwave oven was in the dining room at the giant dorm I lived in at UCLA. They placed three of these in the dining room and we were all amazed that a cup of water could boil in 90 seconds. It IS getting harder to find competent trustworthy repair people these days.

  16. I have to agree with those who said it would be easier and most likely less expensive to replace it than repair it. And considering that it was a latch issue, I think it would also be safer. You want to be sure the seal is intact.

  17. I certainly do wish you better luck.
Not have the Internet - I can truthfully say I would be lost. Sad but true.

  18. Hey, I am always at the end of the comments! Every day I expect our microwave to go out. We bought this big clunky thing in 1987. It's been a good one! You just can't get good service anymore. We paid 199.00 to get the generator serviced last week. I happened to walk past the generator a couple of days ago, during all this rain and noticed the doors from the electrical panel box sitting on the ground. The service guy forgot to put the doors back on. The screws were laying on top of the box. My husband fixed the doors and then called the company. The man who answered the phone offered no apology but said, "I don't know what tell you". :(

  19. I like shopping online, and I would be lost without my microwave. We had to replace ours recently. I don't cook meats or meals in it, but I sure like it for thawing the frozen meats, etc, and for "re-warming". What's this world coming to!

  20. Better luck tomorrow Red!! Some shops are very bad in after service :((

  21. Disappointing when people don't do the work they are supposed to do, and in fact make things worse!

Amazing how we quickly get used to things, isn't it? I do remember a time before the internet! :) I used to read the paper every morning but now I just read news online. We still get the Guardian Weekly mailed to us, which I love.
