Take This, Farside

Farside at Far Side of Fifty is the creator of the Minnesota snow stick. The snow stick is a yardstick that Farside carefully sets up in her yard to measure the amount of snow received. It also works to show when the last snow melts at her place.

Now Farside has persuaded some bloggers in snow areas to set up a snow stick. I have a snow stick. Last night we got 20cm (How's it goin' eh?) 8 in (ya'll)  of snow so I decided that it was a good time to report.

Now Farside is a bit competitive so I get to brag that I have more snow, if that's something that is worth bragging about. Now we've had lots of thawing so this is not remotely close to the total snow of the winter.

So without further adieu, here is my snow stick.

Centimeters. Next time I'll get the printing but it says 28 cm

Since the printing is larger you can see 11 in.

Since I had snow, I had to do some shovelling. The micro manager was a good helper this morning and notice the great snow shovelling form.

Nice shovel job

Great style!

Sunset tonight is at 5:18 and sunrise tomorrow is at 8:18 so that gives us 9 hours of sunlight.

My back lane

Snow across my street.

  1. The snow looks simply outstanding, but then I am silly that way, and for some peculiar reason I love winter.

    1. I don't have any complaints about winter. I have complaints about myself for not getting out more often.

  2. At least all this snow must be putting you in the mood for some fancy ice skating.

    1. Well, maybe not skating, but certainly cross country skiing. I was out yesterday.

  3. Hmmm....I think I might hop on board and get me one of those sticks...eh? Our snow is much less than last year, though!

  4. Whoa... That there's a lot of snow. I understand my daughter in Chicago is due for a snowfall tonight or tomorrow. Yours too.

    1. It's a lot of snow but many places get much more. I'll have to check with my daughter and see how she's surviving. She works from home in bad weather as she has a 45 min commute.

  5. That's a good, honest covering of snow! Real snow.

  6. It is a rather load of snow you have. A lot of work to get a path clean. Bur I am a bit jealous at your snow. We only had 1 cm a few hours and than it was gone.

    1. We got 20 cm and it's on top of other snow.

  7. Why, you could do a block at least with that fine shovelling form eh, Red. ha,ha - fine photos and snow is perfect, before the road crews come, salt n sand and then dirty snow. You captured it in its beauty. We have had yet another blizzard within three days for another 2 days. Sun shining this morning and my measuring "Yard Stick" is buried out in the yard.....bragging....can't measure it if I can't see it. ha,ha

    1. Most times I shovel without stopping. this dump was a challenge. You guys have really had more than your share of snow.

  8. I think you have more snow that Far Side, Red. We are also so far behind our usual amounts in the mountains here that people are beginning to worry, and not just the skiers.

    1. Mountains can pick up snow in a hurry. Our mountains have lots of snow this winter and great skiing.

  9. Looks the same here, we got 6 inches but it is still falling. Haven't walked out too far, but I can see my street not even with tracks.Meet me at the sled hill!

  10. Your street reminds me of my childhood in ND and Canada. I don't miss the amount, but I do miss the snow. When it snows here, people go into panic mode and buy the stores out. Then we get a dusting that melts super quick, but at least everyone can have a sandwich and a glass of milk without fear of starving.
    Have a super Sunday Red!

    1. Southerners always comment on the beauty of snow but have no Idea of how difficult it can be.

  11. Hi Red, Is it just the way I'm looking at this or is that snow stick at the top of a drift? : - ) Your "eh" and "ya'll" has me smiling ... thank you. I like this post. I also looked at your earlier post, about System Failure and the RCMP Officer's death. Such a sad story. And kind of surprising since I think Canada does a much better job of controlling gun possession than we do down here in the states. John

    1. Now it would take one old teacher to raze another old teacher about putting my snow stick in a snow drift! Good one. Actually my stick is on top of a table in the back yard.
Our murder rate has been dropping for 15 years and yes we have fewer guns and more restrictions. I'd like to see more.

  12. Your space looks a lot like our space...plenty of snow around! WE got a good dump of it recently. I love that the days are getting longer and longer.

  15. Same here the snow measures.. As a kid I breathed happiness being outside for hours. Yet if your shoveling as I see. I presume you got a real breath of Vitamins one should have called . Gusto. Nice picture blog Red. I enjoyed it.

    1. Yes, as a kid I can remember playing in the snow all day. What fun!

  17. Wow! That's a big snow. Around here people would think I was crazy if I stood a yard stick out front. :) Your wife does have great style! Looks like she know what she's doing. She looks petite and very cute.

    1. My wife found a big cap with earflaps a few years ago when we used to go to the mountains to cross country ski. She likes to wear it outside, but not down town.

  18. Fun captures. I'd say that you're pretty competitive also. ;) We have about the same amount of snow (I'd guesstimate) but not all in one snowfall. I like the way you've differentiated between centimetres and inches with those remarks. Too cute.

  19. Love the snow stick. I think we got 5 inches here by the lakeshore in WI. You do a great job shoveling.

  20. I have a snow stick, too! Mine shows 25cm, although we are expecting a ton of snow. The driveway is done. I tromped out into the forest to check the trailcam. No coyotes were dumb enough to venture out in the night!

  21. We received a couple more inches of snow a couple days ago. But you have MUCH more than we do! Nice photos, by the way.

  22. I feel that a snow stick here would be a bit pointless: the most we've had is a mere slight covering which was gone in a day.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yep, it would be pointless. I'm not sure what good it does here when the weather office measures the snow much more accurately than my snowstick.

  23. You had more last night than I've had all winter I think. :) Nice shoveling job! I can remember large snows growing up and my Dad shoveling snow like yours. He was meticulous at how he piled it up. Stay warm Red!

  24. The micro manager looks like she knows what she's doing Red. Great photos and I like the idea of your snow stick. We haven't had a real snow yet, we always seem to be on the edge. We had about three inches fall a few weeks. It was wet and slushy and disappeared quickly. A couple of weeks ago we had a dusting. Nothing like you're getting up north.

  25. No need for a snow stick here .. just 2cm overnight and it had disappeared by midday!

Excellent work by the micro manager .. give her a gold star.
