You Know You're Getting Old When...

You know you're getting old when both your kids are wearing bifocals! Yes, this happened recently when my daughter got bifocals and like most people who get bifocals found that they were a great help. My son got bifocals a couple of years ago and makes good use of them.

Now my daughter has great taste when it comes to colors so her new glasses have colors that go along with skin tones and all the clothing she wears. My son just bought a very fine pair of glasses that that give him a look of distinction. Yes, I know I'm bragging about my kids.

Now I wish I had my first pair of glasses to show you how cool they were! I had the pair with the huge lens until a few months ago when I got new glasses.

The kids bifocals got me thinking about the time I started wearing bifocals. I remember the awkwardness of not being able to see your feet when I first put on the bifocals. Since I was a teacher I looked over student work at their desks from a distance. I didn't really miss the close vision. But sooner or later it had to happen and I got bifocals which were usually kept in my pocket until I needed them. This meant a lot of taking off and putting on of glasses. It was a nuisance. Finally, I needed a prescription for distance and I began wearing glasses all the time.

So I have a vivid idea of what the kids have just gone through. It's one of the first steps to aging. I first saw my son with glasses when we were on skype. I asked why he needed glasses and he replied. "Because  I'm an old fart like you!"

So for most of us sooner or later we require the aid of bifocals and of course the condition progresses.

How're you doing with your bifocals?

  1. I had cataract surgery on both eyes so I no longer need bifocals...only reading glasses. I take them on and off they are a pain. Before my surgery I had a real hard time getting used to bifocals...couldn't see my feet and I was tripping all the time and the long freezer compartment in the grocery aisle used to swim around in my vision enough to make me dizzy at first...my eye Doc just laughed and said you will get used to it:)

  2. I finally gave up with my trifocals. I just couldn't get used to them. I now have two glasses; one for distance and one for reading. However, they're not very convenient so I may very well try bifocals next.

  3. I tried bifocals a while back but just couldn't get on with them. Between using a motorcycle and a lawn mower even graded ones didn't help. So I am stuck with taking mine off when I want to see things closer up.

    1. When I needed stuff or distance then I kept the glasses on and the trifocals worked well.

  5. I have trifocals. I have tripped a few times over the years, but trying to maintain balance. I have worn glasses for decades unlike my vain children who both need glasses badly!!

    1. As long as you're reading it's okay. When you have to look at something else it gets complicated.

  9. Hi Red, I love what your son said to you. Ha ha ... That will have me smiling all day! Yes, I'm an old fart too, and yes, I've got the bifocals. The funny thing is ... I guess all things about getting older are not so bad. The last time I went in for a vision check my doctor told me my distance vision was actually getting better to the extent that he didn't think I needed to wear glasses when driving. It's something to do with the way the eyeball ages and changes dimensions. Now, even tho I can see OK while driving it just seems strange not to have the glasses on. Have a great day Red.

  10. I have been using progressive lenses for ages. I do remember when I first started wearing them they took some getting used to, but my brain adapted, and now I don't even notice them. One day I'll have cataract surgery and won't need them any more. :-)

  14. I have bifocals but I still take them off when I read. I wore contacts for fifteen years but got tired of the fuss, but I do hate cleaning my glasses all the time.

  15. It's hard to get used to bifocals, but in the end it's worth it for being able to see. That said, I have a brand new pair a year old that I've never been able to wear and still wearing the 4 year old ones. The new ones make me dizzy.

  16. I used to wear bifocals when I taught school. I hated looking over them to see in the back of the classroom. I hated glasses period. About ten years ago I had eye surgery to correct my vision. I still do not need glasses . Best investment I ever made.

  17. I wear progressives. I really only need glasses for reading with a slight prescription for distance. But I'm pretty much always needing to read something and I got tired of carrying around glasses only to take them off, put them on, take them of...

  18. All I remember about bifocals was that going down stairs was rather awkward. Now it is cataract time. I had one eye done a few years back and will have the other done this summer. That is even more of an old fart than bifocal!

  19. I am laughing my head off. My one relative tells my hubby.. He is an old fart. So laughed at your son saying that.
My two grown ups wear glasses and my daughter in law.
Even one of my Grandgirl. She is 19.

Well I have been told last Spring that I have a degenerated eye. I was told cataracts are next.
So was shocked when eye doc said this.

So for sure I am a real old f. If I am doing my art too long. I get blurred results. Have to stop my art.
