Dull Images

In Alberta we have a mix of atmospheric conditions right now. We've had a mix of shower and thunder clouds through the afternoon and evening. We have about 70 forest fires burning at this time. Then we  have our regular brown atmosphere from the oil industry.

I looked at the skies and saw some possibilities for photos. It was very dull and cloud formations were not sharp. So I decided to take some photos and see what I got. When I first looked at them I was disappointed. Then I saw that I got exactly what was out there. It was just plain dull.

I took these a few minutes before 7:00 Pm. Today our sun sets at 21:38 or 9:38 PM. The second photo faces west and there should be some brightness.

So for some just "try it" shots I learned a couple of things. I am satisfied that I got what was there.

To the west

  1. I like the moody sky in the second shot. You've done better than I have lately. I haven't noticed the sky until just before dark when it looks quite spectacular but too dark to photograph.

    1. It was a moody sky. It was impossible top tell what might happen.

  2. I like the light in the second image. It could do with a bit of a lift but the file size is so small that I can do nothing with it. Send me the original and the light on the grass could make it a smasher.

    1. I may need some coaching on this request.

    2. The first image is the one I think would benefit most. If your camera is shooting and saving JPEG files then just send those. The second picture should be back in your in box now.

  3. Red it's been an odd day without a doubt, we got close to the same thing here. Showers in the morning, bright sunny afternoon then all of a sudden as we were out in St. Albert having dinner a brief, but crazy wind storm and it looked like it was going to pour. As soon as we noticed this the bill was paid and away we went, barely missing the rain... thankfully as I was with a friend on his Harley! Great photos, you captured exactly what there was to capture. Cheers.

  4. I like those cloudy skies, we have a lot of them at the moment with bright sunshines in between. That second photo is very nice.

  5. That's interesting Red. We so often want to capture 'pretty' things when what's actually there is often what tells the story.

    1. I was wondering why it was so dark and then thought that we had a few extras in the atmosphere.

  6. Yes, I've had those days too. We go out for lunch n a drive and I always take my photos, but at this "Spring time", its hard to catch something nice with all the trees so bland looking against the sky, but that will change soon, eh with all the colours coming in for the summer. Just a "dull" day, but only in photos. I like your last photo with the darkened trees and sky. Nice.

  8. And yet with all that glorious nature where you are, the last thing I would have expected to encounter would be air pollution.

    1. This is a huge oil and gas producing area. We are the tar sands province.

  9. I think your pictures are very nice, not dull at all. I know what it looks like when forest fires are burning, though.

    1. I took them because at that time it should have been very light.

  10. It's amazing that we get these clouds, and no rain. I hope you get some and things settle down out there!

  13. What you see and what you get can be two different things with clouds. I used to chase the sunset when out on the farm a lot.

    1. Sometimes we see something that's not really there and then are disappointed with the photo.

  14. Beautifully moody shots, Red. You're getting more daylight than we are.

  16. Hawaii is getting some weird weather too. It was bright and sunny in the morning and right at noon it started raining hard. My poor neighbor had her wash still hanging outside.

I think your skies are looking pretty lovely in your photos.
