The Chickadees Got in the Way

On Sunday I led a small group on a field trip on what we call the River Bend Golf Course Perimeter Trail. The main objective was birding , but anything of an interesting nature  would be fine. The trail passes through heavy old growth forest of mixed aspen and spruce. There's also a tremendous amount of brush. Although most of the time we are about 20 m ( 22 yd) we seldom see the river. So as you can guess this is excellent habitat for birds and other critters. There were very fresh moose tracks but we didn't see a moose.

I had heard that someone had been feeding chickadees on the trail and that chickadees would come to your hand. I took some sunflower seeds in my pocket just in case. The first chickadees we found became very excited when we showed up. So I reached in my pocket for seeds and right away I had a chickadee in my hand. I had seeds in my left hand and my camera in my right hand. I'll have to get better with this technique as heads and tails were chopped off in most of my shots.

Caught in the act!

This old guy looks pretty excited

So 99% of the afternoon was about chickadees.

  2. What fun! Our Chickadees are not the hand feeding type...but they sure do chirp at me when the feeders are empty:)

    1. These aren't handfeeding types either. somebody has spent time with them. If somebody was patient enough yours would hand feed too.

  5. I would love to have a chickadee feeding from my hand. I often take seed with me, but have yet to have anything land on me other than biting insects...

    1. It must take lots of patience to train them. These come to you before you know it.

  6. That is amazing they sit on your hand, I remember from my visit to Canada they did so. Here they are not that easy.

  8. I had a jay eating out of my hand back on a couple of hikes years ago. I never had chickadees get that tame with me, though. It would be a real treat to have my favorite little chickadee do it. :-)

  10. A wild bird perched on your hand -- what could be more thrilling! I've held them at banding stations to release them and I never fail to marvel at how light and delicate they are.

  19. Hi Red, Sure enjoyed this post. Well, I've seen people with birds feeding out of their hands but never had the experience myself. Pretty neat. I got a kick out of Yorkshire Pudding's comment. : ) By the way, in the side bar --> you have a picture of Spencer Street in 2008. How is it looking this year? About the same?

  25. Oh wow Red what an exciting day. My hubby used to do that also and got such gratification having those birds land on his hand. My younger son when he cut the lawn. He used to get the Monarch Butterflies on his t.shirt. At least four. We laughed so hard. We now think it was his white t. shirt that attracted them. He said definitely not Mom. They like me. I am one of a kind. We laughed again. Why did I the camera gal not think back then to take pictures. He was like 13 back then.
