Silent Dreams

I'm always amazed when I discover something for the first time in my 76 years. I have to ask myself, where have I been that I didn't know this before.

     Well, it's about dreams.

Dreams have become less frequent the last few years. I can remember times when I would have several dreams in the same night. So I've had experience with dreams.

Last night I dreamed that I was visiting China. Someone had picked me up in a truck and was taking me to a place to visit. There were no roads. There were only green fields that looked somewhat like AstroTurf. We drove into a pond and I thought here we go, we'll get stuck. No way. We just sailed through the water.

I was taken to a dining hall where about 30 people were eating. It seems to me there was only one thing to eat...pickles! People left the dining hall and one woman and two children were left and they were setting the tables for the next meal.

Through all of this activity there was no sound! No sound for the truck. No sound from the young man driving the truck.
No sound of voices. No sound from the dining hall.

So when I awoke this morning and remembered the dream, I started to wonder. Have any of my dreams had sound? Have I been having dreams for my whole life and there's not sound?

I guess I'll never know. I will be ready to check on the sound the next dream I have.

Do your dreams have sound? Do your dreams have color?

    Sweet dreams!

  2. I have actually thought about this before, and I don't think my dreams have sound, but I don't know for sure.

  3. I think my dreams have sound the way books have sound when I read them. Which means not really

    1. Now that's something I never thought about...sound in books?

  4. Good question. I'm pretty sure there aren't any sounds in my dreams but then I don't hear myself talking in my sleep and anyone who sleeps within earshot of me will tell you that I do. There must be a dream expert out there who will know for sure.

  5. I never remember dreams but I do recall many years ago when I was using Spanish day in and day out that I dreamt in Spanish. It must have been rather stilted.

    1. Yes, my dreams tend to be quite limited in time and space.

  7. I THINK my dreams have sound and I THINK my dreams are in color, but I can't really remember. You're lucky you can remember your dreams in detail. I remember them when I just wake up and immediately start forgetting them. Art sometimes wakes me to ask what I was dreaming about because I'll call out in my sleep.

    1. Like you, I forget most dreams. This one, for some reason, I remember.

  8. Interesting, dreaming you went to China. You can travel in your dreams, don't have to leave your house for it. I agree with Adam about the sounds.

  9. That's a good question about sound. It's been awhile since I've remembered any dreams. I do believe they have sound. I've always dreamed in colour too except for once.

  10. I cannot remember any soundless nor any with sounds. I have colourless dreams, but once, not so long ago, I had a dream with some colours. I remember me thinking:" so there are colours in my dreams !"
Thanks for your visit. The aborigines you wrote about are Indians I suppose? I have a lot of contacts among the Australian Aborigines. My daughter was once married to an aboriginal man. We still see his relatives regularly. She has two beautiful children by him.

    1. Yes, we very seldom use the term Indian. We use first nations a lot.

  11. The only time I became aware of my dreams having sound was after I went deaf. For years I would dream and become aware that in my dreams I was able to hear. When I eventually had my implant (which has enabled me to "hear" again, I can no longer remember whether in my dreams there is sound or not.

    1. Now you add a very interesting point to the sound in dreams. I wonder if other deaf people have the same experience.

  12. I know I have sounds in my dreams. In fact a few nights ago I had a very realistic dream where I was trying to teach ten people how to skydive and had numerous conversations with them. I also dream in vivid color and sometimes they seem to have happened. I'm sure that many of my memories never happened while I was awake! :-)

  14. I have sound in my dreams but not always. This is a very interesting post Red. I can remember having vivid talks in a dream, but also remember soundless dreams. H-m-m-m

    1. I wonder why we don't remember the senses of light and sound. Are there smells, tastes and feelings?

  15. I know I dream a lot, but I rarely remember them. I do have a recurring dream of a large cavern, being at a bonfire, with knights, dragons, trolls, and other beasties all gathered around, and we're all singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame.

No, I have no idea what that means.

    1. Many people have recurring dreams. Since I was a teacher, I had teacher dreams.

  16. I don't think my dreams have sound. I've never thought about that. I do dream a lot and most of the time remember my dreams.

  17. What an interesting dream. And an even more interesting question. Do my dreams have sound? Hmm... Now that I think about it, I'm not sure. Perhaps there isn't and I only imagine there is. I've never noticed. Or thought about it. Next time I dream, it'll be the first thing I try to remember as soon as I wake up.

  18. Well I am not sure about this but I know when I dream about someone who is dead they talk to me. So does this count as sound?

  19. I liked your dream you shared Red. Very interesting. China and the one food item. Wow how interesting is that. My hubby talks in his sleep. Most times Dutch as he is Dutch.but does not speak Dutch anymore to relatives since living in Canada as a every day language. I know some dutch but not what he seems to garble fast. Ha.ha. Many years ago my hubby dreamed Florida had those sink holes that cave in with cars and the man who died in his front yard if you remember. He remembered distinctly those. . And last year was many. Scary. He then said it is going to happen. You see. I said that is scary. He said I know but it will happen.

  20. Hi Red, I think most humans dream while sleeping but maybe they just don't remember it. I do remember mine occasionally. I can't honestly answer about sound ... hah hah ... never paid attention to that ... will try to "hear" on the next opportunity. You have a good sense of curiosity and I think that helps a lot in teaching.
