It Was a Cold and Nasty Day

We've been cruising along through March and April with above average temperatures. It's been downright pleasant. It's a long time since we had overnight frost. It's been windy from time to time but overall very pleasant. It's been so pleasant that I've ridden 100 km (62 mi) on my bike. One day we had a high of 27C (83 F) .

So this was not normal April weather. We usually get snow and lots of overnight frost. We can also get very nasty blizzards.

Well, it had to end. It cooled off Friday. Yesterday morning when I went birding it was miserable 4 C(37 F). In the afternoon it started to rain and about 6:00 Pm snow started and turned to huge wet flakes. Most of the snow melted as it hit the ground. We did accumulate about 2.5 Cm (1 in).

So it was just a matter of time before we got some cold and nasty weather in April. ...and we could still get more.

Now it got to 0 C. As you can see the bleeding heart is developing quickly. If it cools off slowly these hardy plants can withstand lots of frost as most the moisture leaves the plant cells so the cell doesn't expand and break.

  1. Wow! You really had some hot and cold weather in the month of April. We've had rain and heat but nothing so extreme as you. I hope Spring is just around the corner for you.

  2. I did not know that bleeding hearts were so hardy. But they do grow well in cold climates. You road 62 (thanks for doing the math) miles!! You are in good shape!

    1. Plants are developed for different frost free zones. I think we have about 120 frost free days.

    1. Hey, I don't mean to be defensive, but we don't send our weather to you!!!Our weather shifts down and through Minnesota. However, I hope you don't get the bad weather . Your spring has been terrible.

  4. I think plants are generally pretty good at navigating these springtime temperature fluctuations! You definitely look colder than we are at the moment, but we're going through a chilly spell too.

  5. You seem to suffer the same weather conditions as here I see. No winter but in April hail and cold wet weather. The seasons seems to move.

  8. Ah, snow. I thought it was a bit weird for you to be having such nice weather. It will return after Mother Nature gets over her tantrum. :-)

  9. Not what you want to see this time of year! But I'm guessing it won't stick around for very long.

  11. Hi Red, It was unusually hot in Seattle last week too. Yes, it cooled off and we got rain over the weekend and it continues here on Monday morning. I looked up your elevation there in Red Deer ... 2,805' (855m). I expect that helps with the cool! :-) Neat post, thanks for including the conversions.

    1. Our April weather is variable. It's not uncommon for snow and cold and it's not uncommon for nice sunny weather.

  19. My daughter in Chicago has been telling me about the crazy weather there too. She kept texting me photos of snow in April. Then it'd get hot and then cold again. Poor flowers must have been totally confused.
