A Special Day

Sometimes I go looking for a special day for a post topic. Today that day is ready made and I don't have to do any looking.

So Mother's Day...one of the more meaningful of the special days.

So Happy Mother's Day to the special bloggers I follow who are Moms. I was once asked why so many of the blogs I follow are written by women. Well, today gives one of the reasons. Most of the women bloggers I follow are Moms.

I can also take time to remember my Mom. My Mom had super challenges in her life. She was a young person in the 1930's and was married in 1938.  Now the really hard part happens. She had four children in five years. She had to live in a very small house with absolutely no conveniences...electricity, running water ...nothing. I can't imagine doing washing for a family without a power washer. To sum it up Mom put up with very challenging times.

Later on Mom lost her only daughter.

Mom left us all too early at age 59. It was awful to watch cancer take her.

Next week Mom would be 102!

So Happy Mother's Day to all my followers who are Moms. You're the greatest.

  1. My mother was born in 1905, which I think would make her 111. She also was taken by cancer but at a more advanced age. It seems the death of a mother always leaves a place nothing else can fill.

    1. 1973...43 years ago. It was pretty exciting to be a kid in that situation. Mom read to us most nights.

  3. As I grow older the holiday means more to me. I had my youngest over and fixed her a nice meal, and best of all a really good cheesecake.both my parents would have been 92 this year.

  4. That 1920's picture of your mom is adorable. I would have to have that one framed and hanging on a wall. How sad that she lost her only daughter. She must have been so proud of raising four sons that turned out to be such nice men. I loved seeing the other two pictures too.

    1. There couldn't have been very many cameras around in 1920. Now her sons...sometimes we were little rascals I have to admit.

    1. We were rascals at times. Most nights she read to us. I have some of the books that she read over and over. she read some of the burgess series. I don't know how many times she read Reddy Fox to us.

  7. My mom died at 69, which seemed young, but your mom was even younger. She lived a hard life but she contributed much over her lifetime, it seems. She had YOU, Red! :-)

    1. We look back at these people now and it seems that they were very young. Red was kind of rebellious and a rascal at times.

  12. I am in awe of your mother! To have four kids in that short amount of time, and then no electricity, etc... wow!! So very sad her life was cut short. She obviously did a great job of raising her children, as evidenced by how well you turned out. I raise a toast to your Mom (and my own, who died at 64)

  14. My mother was born in 1921, and had seven children. Our first house did not have hot water or an indoor bathroom. Times were hard, Fortunately we had our mother until she was almost 90. We miss her.
I always enjoy hearing about other mothers and their younger lives. Thanks for this post.

  18. Did your mother have a first name or was she just called Mom? And in the picture of Mom in 1966 which son was you? I am thinking the fellow on the far right? Right?

  20. Very nice tribute. I've answered a similar question. I think one big reason is I mostly avoid contentious politics & so do most women bloggers...:)
