BEGINNING OF SCHOOL YEAR PHOTO

I've noticed on the blog and face book lots of the traditional start of the year photos. This got me thinking! It looks like the school photo was traditional far and wide. I've seen some European (Dutch) examples. There are many American examples.

I also wondered how far back this tradition goes. My Mom took our first school day photos when I started school in 1945. Mom had a camera, but many people at that time did not have cameras.

I think the school photo gave a message to kids that school was important and that parents supported them. First day of school was an occasion to observe.

Now I'm not sure how many years Mom took our pictures. I can only find photos from about gr. four or five. I guess when I started high school it wasn't cool the have a picture taken.

It seems like the tradition carries on. My grand children had first day of school photos.

Now I'm so proud of my photos that I just had to show them to you.

Right to left: Brother gr.2, sister gr 1, me gr 3 Somehow Rex  got to be a major part of the picture.

My brother and I . Brother starting gr. one and I in gr. 2. New lunch boxes. I'm the one with the spiffy bib overalls.

I also have to show my own kids on school starting day.

The start of Middle School

How about you?  Did you get your picture taken on the first day of school?

  1. Fun photos. Going back to when we were little really makes one aware of all those years that have passed so quickly.

  2. Yes I believe a photo was taken of me the morning I first got on the bus to Hull - at the age of 11 and I also took photos of my own children at the same age before starting secondary school.

  4. oh, my gosh. those are precious. your daughter did not look too thrilled to be going to school, though.

  5. Maybe I did, but I don't remember. I took a picture of my son's first day of kindergarten, but I was crying so hard it's lucky it turned out. If there were pictures of my first days of school, they are lost to posterity. :-)

    1. Moms have difficulty leaving their kids at kindergarten for the first time. It's just that way.

  7. Yes, but I do not have the photos as my brother has taken all the albums and shares only a few scans every now and then! I do think we take them because as parents this is a very emotional day.

  8. I had a picture in school as I had put up in my blog last week. And me when I was three and then teen and dating, before pictures with my guy I married.
    Then the wedding, and now.

I remember dad having a old box camera. He used to take pictures witt that.
Back then. I walked to school myself. I could not go to Grade one till I was 7. As my Birthday was January 8th? 1942. And my friends walked to-gether all of us. I was such an independent Kid I was told. And stubborn. Parents did not really walk the kids. Nor take school pictures like your Mom did. You were very blessed your Mom did. I threw my pictures in a box. And they are old and some almost breaking. I did put on my dvds to save.

I have pictures of my kids. Not sure if I have them to school first day. How bad is that.

Hundreds when small of me. I was a mover so I don't think Dad could catch too many pictures of me I was told. I never sat still. My nick name from my family .Was legs a Eleven. Have you heard that expression. I won every race, every broad jump. Standing. I was the Olympic girl back then. Your pictures are darling. So clear. You kept them spotless.

    1. I've never heard "legs eleven" You weren't the only active kid. How else would we like kids. If they're active they're healthy.

  13. We did not have our pictures taken on the first day and as a parent I didn't do that either. I guess the school pictures taken at the beginning of school month became my parents collection of visuals of seeing our change is size and shape.

  15. How cute! I only have one of my first day in first grade. No kindergarten out in the country in "those days,". After that the first day wasn't documented in my family.

  17. Hi Red, Nope, no pics on the first day. However, I did have a "class" picture taken every year, grades 1 through 6. It seems those pictures were taken a few weeks into the school year. Have those pics around here somewhere but they are not nearly as cool as your pics. :-) It is neat to look back at the old pics and recall the class friends.

  20. These are great Red. You were a very cute little boy. I only remember the school photos being taken, none taken by my mom, or dad at the start of any school year. Except just for the ones from a holiday.
