NATIONAL CRAYON DAY

Today is National Crayon day! I sometimes have to comment on some of the national days that are observed from time to time. So I'll probably have half of my readers upset with me.

Okay, I'll admit that I'm not arty at all and that colors don't play a big role in my life so when fusses are made over crayon colors I have to say ,"Give your head a shake." Every year my Mom bought me a standard 7 or 8 pack of new crayons for the start of each school year. Then one year some kid had a 12 pack of crayons. The standard pack today is 24. I think you can buy a 64 pack.

Crayola makes a big fuss when any colors are changed. This year they are ditching, oops , retiring dandelion. Dandelion has been around for a long time and a new color is going to be added. As usual a big deal and process are made to name a new color. The new color hasn't been chosen yet.

Now the adult colorers (I don't think this is a word) may have something to say about my making fun of naming crayons. Apparently coloring for adults is a great activity for adults and seniors these days. In fact, I am somewhat interested in adult coloring for a pass time.

Maybe I could color inside the lines now that I'm a senior!

However, I think this day is a very blatant advertisement for a brand of crayons. . Looking at some of the different websites it's a very smooth skillful advertising ploy.

After all, they got me to look at it!

What about you? Do crayon names impress you?

  1. No, but I love the smell of crayons ... ahhhh

I've tried the colouring books for adults. It doesn't appeal any more than it did when I was a kid and I'm still terrible at it!

  2. Crayon names don't impress me but I am a bit of a traditionalist and I admit to being a little sad when I heard on the news that the color dandelion is being retired! I do have a coloring book for adults and find it can be relaxing to color once in a while.

  3. Fun post Red. I have never thought much about colors of crayons. I just remember the ones I had as a child at school and at home. They were all just yellow, pink, purple, etc. I never knew the fancy names for them.

  4. Sometimes I think it might be fun to get some crayons and play around with them, but I haven't done it yet. I hear it can be very relaxing to color in those adult coloring books. I sure do remember the smell of crayons from long ago. Happy Crayon Day, Red! :-)

  5. I love crayons. It takes me back. We have a ton on hand for when the grandies visit. The colours don't bother me much. I like to draw, but use coloured pencils!

  6. You have a point on the advertising angle - now that I think of it, I saw a teaser on Facebook about what the next color will be.

  8. I haven't used crayons since grade school. Not having kids means that'll continue.

    1. I may have touched crayons when my kids were in the house. Both my kids had some artistic ability. They didn't get it from Dad.

  9. I must say I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to crayons as an adult. But as a child, I was always jealous of the kids who had those gigantic crayon packages with colors like Cornflower and Burnt Umber. I don't remember Dandelion. Maybe that one came later? Or maybe I never used it and neither did anyone else and that's why it's being retired...

    1. As a teacher, those kids with the gigantic box of crayons were a nuisance. Other kids always want to borrow certain colors.

  10. The Micromanager here is into this adult coloring thing and swears by it. Says it is a real relaxing thing. Haven't yet, but think I will give it a try. Probably drawing pencils though, not crayons. Sad to see dandelion go. You might have been able to fool me with that one ... it just looked like yellow to me. Do they have another name for yellow? :-)

  11. I love the names of colors. I think the best name, the sexiest name for a color, is alizarin crimson.

  13. To be honest I've never given any thought to crayon names, wasn't even aware that there were any. How behind the times am I? Let me add I'm perfectly happy staying there, too.

  14. I've never really cared about the names of crayons. As long as the colours are nice, what does it really matter? I do enjoy those adult colouring books. I find it a very relaxing pastime.

  15. Hi There - I admit to loving crayons....liked to colour when I was a kid and even have a collection of crayons of different eras. Use adult colouring books occasionally - relaxing for a little bit of time - not too often, the nice thing about the adult ones----so many colours......checking in....rotator problems, have not been available to post for a while. Cheers

  17. We've driven by the Crayola Experience and factory in Easton, PA, a couple of times; never stopped and gone in. Maybe we will one of these days. B has tried a few adult coloring books. I prefer crossword puzzles.
