BIM BOM BAY

I have always liked listening to music. I'm not  musician or a singer. I just enjoy music.

So there are many days when a tune, a phrase or piece of music rolls around in my head. Usually this bothers me as it comes back again all day.  I can't stop it. It's known as an ear worm.

Now today was different. Bim Bom Bay popped into my head.  I couldn't quite place the song. A few hours later Jimmy Rodgers popped into my head and then I remembered the song.  Jimmy Rodgers was at the peak of his career in the late 50's. He was a singer and a song writer.

Now this is not the Jimmie Rodgers of country music fame who was from the Carter Family era.  The Jimmie Rodgers known as the singing brakeman.

So I googled Jimmie Rodgers and found the song and listened to it. It's been 60 years since I heard Bim Bom Bay. It brought back a lot of music before rock and roll took over.

There was much good folk music in the late 40's and early 50's. ...the Lime Lighters, Burl Ives,  There were some fantastic quartets like the Four Lads. the Four Aces.

Some of his will start rolling around my head in the next few days and I will remember the groups.

I'm sure other people have the same experience I do and music pops into your head.

So I looked up Jimmie Rodgers and found much more than Jimmie Rodgers.

Oh , Bim Bom Bay comes from a place in Portugal which has a similar sound but different spelling.

What music rolls around in your head?

  1. I watched 60 Minutes last night and there was an orchestra playing a Mozart piece. I went to bed with it rolling around in my head and left sometime during the night. It happens to me all the time. You reminded me of a favorite quartet when I was growing up, the Ink Spots. Often one of their songs will come to me out of the blue and take its time to leave. :-)

    1. It seems that the tunes in my head come from a long time ago. but I really like music so that's maybe why tunes come to my head.

    1. I'm sure there are more similar alliterations. Yes Messiah sometimes comes to my head. I haven't heard it for many, many years.

  4. Halfway through this post I had to go search for that song, so now as I'm typing this I'm also listening to Jimmie Rodgers. I've never heard this song before. But what a fun tune! I get ear worms all the time. Nowadays with the internet, it's easy to track songs down.

  5. I haven't heard that particular song -- I will look it up shortly! But I find that I almost always have a song going through my head. Sometimes I don't even really hear it until I stop and think about it. It just runs in the background like the radio.

  6. Ear worms can be annoying at times especially if it's a song you never liked but for some unknown reason, it's in your memory bank.

OK, I have one for you … you are a birder, like myself, so maybe you will enjoy. This is Simon & Garfunkel’s Sparrow. On YouTube https://youtu.be/FniUPxpYYAU Give it a listen if you can. Wishing you a good week ahead! John

    1. It seems that one singer will stay in my head for days or weeks and I will roll through many of their songs. Try Pat Boone?

  9. Every day a different song gets stuck in my head - it depends on what I hear on the radio as I'm waking up.

I didn't recognize Jimmie Rodgers' name but when I checked YouTube I know a few of his songs after all! And then I had to veer off and read about his voice problems, which was interesting, too.

  10. Music that rolls around in my head? Snatches of songs I heard or sung years ago including church hymns from when I was a choirboy in our village church... "Ye holy angels bright/ Who wait at God's right hand/ Or through the realms of death/ Fly at your Lord's command...".... "The Realms of Death" would make a great title for a horror novel.

  11. I often do the same with a song I woke up to in my head. Someone asked me if I was a musician because of my love for music, and I said I play a great stereo.

  12. Every once in awhile an irritating tune becomes an earworm, but mostly the sort of music that I tend to get stuck in my head is fine by me. Some weeks back I had Sinatra singing One For My Baby in my head for several days. A good one.
