MOTHER'S DAY BRINGS MEMORIES

Mother's day brings lots of greetings to Mom's and an expression of appreciation of all that Moms do. It's a day to stop and consider how much Moms do for us. Some people just give a greeting and some have a lavish celebration. Sadly some don't mark the occasion at all.

Well, some of us elderly people have our memories jogged and we think of our mothers of long ago. We can  not wish them a happy Mother's Day but we can think back to all that our Mothers did for us.

I like to remember back to the time before I was born. Well, I can't really do that but I can certainly put many things together and then realize how much my Mom did for me.

First, there was lots of excellent food but no money. Mom had gone through the depression as a young person and the issue was to survive. Mom's house was very poor. In the winter the house froze out over night. I was kept snug and warm, but I can easily realize how hard it was to raise a small child under those conditions.

These memories or the research make me appreciate all that was done for me under extenuating circumstances.

Mom died in 1973 before she turned 60.

  1. What a lovely picture of your Mom and your son! You lost your Mom way too soon and that is difficult. I lost my Mom when I was in my 30's with two young sons and I always felt a little cheated that I didn't have her around longer. I imagine you felt the same way. I still miss her and think of her often especially on days like Mother's Day.

I can imagine your Mom did have a hard time raising her children during the depression and in the very cold winters. I grew up hearing about the depression and it taught me to not waste anything.

  2. Tough times for bringing a baby into the world but your mom managed to give you a safe home and good memories. It looks like she was a very loving grandma, too.

  3. Hi Red, What a great tribute to your mother. During my years of teaching I often marveled at the wonderful relationship between mothers and their children. Now, as a senior, it makes me smile to see these tributes on Mother’s Day.

    1. I had fun with the kids because Mom's could always find the guilty party and get the truth. They all admitted to this,

  4. I thought about my own mother and wrote a nice little tribute to her, as I often do on Mother's Day. She's been gone for 25 years now but she still lives strong in my heart. I really like that picture of your mom, Red. Thanks for sharing it. :-)

  6. That is such a great picture. Your mother was young when she died, like my dad. He died in 1976 at 61 years old. I imagine your mom kept you warm even when she was cold. Mothers are wonderful.

    1. Thanks. For some reason or other my wife usually used black and white film.

  11. Your mum was so young when she died. All that hardship combined with less advanced medicine conspired against some people.
It's good to read your tribute, I'm sure she would have enjoyed it

  13. A post to make us think about what our Mom's did for us and not just on Mothers' Day.

  14. That is a great old photo Red. Certainly one that will be viewed for years to come.

Mother's day is a bit bittersweet for me, because I have zero fond memories of my mom. Thank goodness I have my wife and daughters (that are also mothers) to celebrate on this day.
