MURALS

Our small city has a few murals. As with all murals some are good some are bad and a lot are in between.

I have been looking at one of these murals for five years or more. I can see it from a parking lot that I use when I wait for the micro manager to do some business. Usually  I forget to take my camera. Sometimes it's too cold or wet or poor light! What a long list of poor excuses. When I'm in this parking lot I'm parked illegally to some extent. The parking lot is provided by the business so it wouldn't be cool to park and then walk away to take photos.

Well, the other day I did get my act together.

This mural is rather small and is at the end of an alley. It's kind of roughly done but you are drawn to the rather wild expression.

Now I thought there might be another mural two or three doors up the alley so I continued. Yes there was another mural on the back of an old hotel that has been remodeled to provide housing to homeless who qualify. This mural had a much more complex idea.

On my way back from photographing the second mural I found a third mural that was on  a wall beside the first one. You can see the first mural on the right.Again it is rather simple.

So here you are. I got three murals in one day.

The area has a large homeless population as some of their friends have accommodation so there is visiting.

I know there are more murals in the city. I just have to find them and get over all my weak excuses.

  1. Well now, what do I think about these murals. The two depicting people much resembles the artwork I see done by the homeless population here in Portland. The one with the tree is more complex and I don’t know what to say about it except that I like it better than the two depicting people.

    1. Something about being out on a limb that I can't get.

  2. I was trying to decide on that first one if that is a map of the world on the face. All of them are quite interesting.

    1. Yes, I saw the top of the forehead as a globe.

  3. These are very interesting. I wonder, like Linda said, if that was supposed to be a map of the world on the face of the first mural. The green parts over the eyes sort of look like the continents. My favorite is the tree. I love the fairy tale look of it and it seems to have a story behind it.

    1. I didn't see the continents in the eyes until you told us.

  4. I like the first the best. Do not know why,but it seems to speak to me. The others are interesting but not as passionate. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I love the idea of murals. Good work tracking them down, and good luck looking! It's nice to have a project.
I enjoyed visiting your Alberta. I wish we could have had a meet up!

    1. I go by the murals and don't stop so nothing gets done. Well maybe next time you'll put red deer on your agenda. You did the right thing to visit the mountains. I've stayed in the Banff springs for conferences. It's a different place.

  7. We have lots of murals in my town, too. I wrote a post way back in the dark ages about them. Maybe it's time for a new one. I like the tree the best, but all your murals are interesting, Red. :-)

  9. It's one of the things that I really like and which used to be regarded as graffiti.

    1. Yes some of the old graffiti was very good stuff.

  10. These are great! Glad you explored and found them. The woman at the top looks like a depiction of Gaia, the Earth personified, but that's just a guess on my part. That middle one is a bit confusing -- trees create rainbows and help us read books?

    1. I thought of Gaia too but didn't know how to spell it.

  12. I like all of these; it's always nice to see something besides plain buildings. On a different topic, you actually have housing for qualifying homeless? That is a very good thing, in my opinion.

  13. Hi Red, These are interesting murals. They remind me of something here in Seattle. There were some buildings that were getting a lot of graffiti on their exterior walls. For a while the City tried to paint over the graffiti. That just created a new canvas for the graffiti vandals. Somebody came up with an idea ... paint a mural on the building. So they did and the vandals left it alone. Problem solved and most folks appreciate the mural art.

    1. I think the same process happened all over. It just took time to come up with a solution.

  14. Nice post Red. I love to see good urban murals. I am wondering what this "business" is that The Micro Manager undertakes in the city centre? Does it involve a violin case and a machine gun?

  15. Hello Red, what a lovely collection of murals. I would much rather see one of these murals than the graffiti. Enjoy your day!
