WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES.

Yesterday morning, Nov. 17, it was minus 17 C (0 F) when I got up. I was going out at 10:00 so needed the car. I plugged the car in ( the block heater) to make sure that it would start.

The day before we had a nice winter snowfall...about 6 or 7 cm ( 2 -3 in.) I had shoveled my driveway and found it cold. I say nice snow as it was what we call dry snow...not a sloppy slushy mess.

At 1:30 Pm yesterday I was meeting my bird watching group. It was minus 4 when we started. It was a brisk pleasant winter afternoon.  Nine of us spent 2 hours and found 9 species of birds. At the end of 2 hours I was ready to go home.

Today  Nov. 18 , when I got up it was plus 3 C ( 35 F). Around 9:00 AM it started to rain and rained for a couple of hours. Now we have a sloppy slushy mess. When things freeze this evening it will become icy. For the next three days our highs are 6 and 7 C. This is very unusual weather for us. I prefer weather to be stable and make gradual changes. It's easier to get used to things that way.

So it's been a big change in just 48 hours.

  1. November can be a bugger for icy conditions. I wish it would just stay cold and forget the ice:)

    1. I'm with you on that wish. We've had about ten major snows and they've all melted.

  2. It sure does sound cold there and the ice is not good at all. I hope you are able to stay in and don't have to drive on icy roads. We have had two small snows here and although they have melted it has definitely gotten cold again. I think Winter is trying to come early in most places this year!

    1. We're okay with ice here as we know how to treat the roads and the kind of tires to use. However, ice is still ice and can be dangerous.

  6. I hate the swings in weather. LIke you I want a steady and gradual movement. I think the birds feel the same way!

    1. Well, it doesn't do us much good to complain. we'll have to live with what we get.

  7. I agree! Gradual changes are much preferred over what you've got going on now. Stay safe and please don't slip on the ice. :-)

    1. I have to be careful on ice. It used to be fun to take a big run and slide on the ice. Not so anymore.

  8. The weather is no longer as predictable or stable as it used to be. It mean most of us are a bit unsettled with it all. I hope it won't be too slippery for you to get out and do whatever you need to do in coming days. I do like all the birds you saw on your outing.

  11. Very pretty birds!

We'll see what the weather holds for us here- at present the snow on the ground seems to be staying.

  12. The birds are beautiful. Weird weather everywhere these days. We have cooler temps today but the other day was rather warmish. Be careful on the icy roads.

    1. It's quite flat here so that makes it easier to handle the ice.

  13. Hi Red, I'm with you on the slow changes in the weather. Our Fall weather has been unusual here in Seattle. The month of November has been exceptionally dry. Although the sunshine is appreciated we will pay a price later if we don't get snow up in the mountains soon to fill the reservoirs we depend on next year.

  14. Those are really nice shots! Our weather has been up and down. We do have snow on the ground but I'm not sure how long it will last.

  15. We have also been having the big swings in temperature. When I start wanting to complain, though, I only have to think of the California fires -- what a terrible situation.

  16. I'm wondering if we are going to have more snow in our forecast. I sure enjoyed the shortness of it. It was gone in two days. Thanks for the photos, cute birds!

  17. Well, to paraphrase Mark Twain: if you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes, and it'll probably change.
