WHERE DO I GO NEXT?

On many blogs I follow people have a post on New Year's resolutions. Today Beatrice at the Frog and Penquinn had a thoughtful piece on New Year's resolutions. And then she made 4 resolutions. Beatrice.

I had been thinking about New Years Resolutions. Since it's now Jan. 8 I wasn't thinking very fast. Now I have been guilty of making resolutions in the past. None of them ever worked. But that brings me to a larger issue.

What kind of person am I ? I have a good handle on this issue. I know that I'm disorganized. I know that I'm a random chaotic type. This has bothered me from time to time in my life. Every year when I met with my principal I would set a goal to become better organized. I would walk out of his office thinking he would help me. He thought I would do something on my own. So nothing ever got done.

The disorganization is in my genes. My Mother was a world class clutterer.

Now yesterday I listened to a program on organization. It really interested me. Marie Condo is world famous for organization and has written a book on it. Many people take Marie Condo's ideas and help people get their lives and houses organized. Discussion went around the value of being organized. This method relies on getting rid of stuff ...lots of stuff so that you are left with something more manageable.

And then , what about those who are hopelessly disorganized. They actually found some value for the poor fellow like me who never has his desk cleaned off or the email inbox cleaned up. Did I feel good! They claim we know where to find stuff...not true.  What really happens is that we don't want to let things go. We are compelled to keep things and not put things away. we are afraid we'll lose them. The Micro Manager is supper organized. I hope I die before her as I'd never find anything in all her super organization.

So whether you're a New Year's resolution maker or not , I hope you have a great 2019.

  1. ...I lack organizational skills too. I fly by the seat of my pants and the ride has been GREAT!

    1. "seat of the pants" would very nicely fit my behaviour.

  2. No resolutions for me. I reserve the right to make a change, if I need/want to. I've recently gone on medical marijuana. It's been helpful to reduce anxiety and depression!

    1. Glad to hear that you have something that brings some relief. Anxiety and depression are heavy loads to carry.

  3. I don't make new year resolutions any more. I choose a word and think about it every once in awhile. I am married to a micro manager, and I sure appreciate all the cleaning up after me that he does. We are peas in a pod, Red. :-)

  4. I'm somewhere between a neat freak and disorganized.

    1. So on a good day you're a neat freak and a bad day you're disorganized.

  5. Is that your desk? It doesn't look THAT disorganized. I've seen much worse, believe me!

I read Marie Kondo and I like her advice to minimize the amount of stuff you have -- I think that's definitely a good first step toward better organization. But she gets a little wild with some of her suggestions, like "thanking" your belongings for their service and that kind of thing.

    1. I don't have any problem to get rid of stuff. It's the little pieces of paper reminding me of things to do that get in the way.

  6. That looks like a pretty tidy writing space. Perhaps it’s not yours but the micromanager’s. I think opposites attract in this area, too. The Writer and i couldn’t be more different. I’ll let you guess which one is which!

  7. I think there is a difference between messy and disorganized. My husband and I both tend to be messy, but we can find just about anything we are looking for quite quickly. That being said, if people reduce their possessions, it's possible to cut out the messy part and just keep the organized part. That's what we're aiming for lately. It will take awhile because we've got stuff here from a business my husband ran, from my father, from my mother, and from both our kids. But we are gradually working through it.

    1. This was covered in the radio piece. The messy disorganized can find things.

    1. I do go through things quite often and get rid of things that aren't needed.

  9. I usually try to be organized, sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. My wife is very highly organized so maybe it rubs off on me a bit.

  10. I don't make resolutions any more. I often have some goals I hope to meet but that's about it. I try to take it one day at a time!

I have seen much worse than your desk. That isn't too bad. Of course, being a minimalist, my desk looks somewhat different :)

  11. I am a very organized person, almost, perhaps compulsive about it. It takes time and effort, but I need to do it.

  12. B, the messy one in the house, loves to watch Marie Condo. For her, it's a vicarious pleasure.

  13. I tend to be very organized. I know a lot of people who are not. I call that "never in the same place twice."

  14. I hope 2019 is great for you too, Red. I had friends staying last night and She commented that I was almost 'too' organised. I obviously put on a good front. I am fairly organised by nature but my lapses are many and varied.

  15. I don't make New Year's Resolutions any more. If I did I would say being more organized would be at the top of the list.

  16. I made that one word intention...relax. :) Right now my desk is a hopeless mess, I need to organize a bunch of stuff this winter! :)

  17. Orderly and well-organised people perhaps living and working in minimalist environments think that their way is necessarily right. I wholly disagree. Every life should contain an element of healthy chaos. It is the human way.

  18. I belong to family who seem mad about cleanliness and organisation

I often thought of my grandma and my mom are seriously sick when I was young.

Their passion for neatness and arrangement made me think that

I was balanced on this but how weird that my husband has same madness about it and this makes me sick
    I mean actually sick
