SATURDAY BIRDING

We had another good morning of birding. We went to Hazlett Lake which is a small local lake on the edge of town. It's private property but one of the favorite places the group likes to go.

Today there were very few birds on the water. It's still a little early for the main migration of waterfowl. We saw 18 species today and that's without a lot of water birds.

The family that owns the property has had their own golf course for many years. No one else plays this course.

Estelle is making her way from the shore. the riparian area has been taken over by canary reed grass. Most native riparian plants have disappeared.

Bertha makes her way from the shore.

I found a tree that had recently been damaged by lightening.

A field of canola that has been swathed and ready for harvest.

     The original family home.

  1. You did well with the bird sightings considering no water fowl were included.

    1. It's quiet and if we were more patient and could sit a while we'd see more.

  3. Wow,
I’ve never heard of anyone having their own golf course! Nice that they share their place with birders.

    1. It was a bit windy so birds keep in the shelter. we hoped to get more. One time we saw 30 species.

  5. I read recently that golf is now the rage in Canada, which surprises me. (Isn't it too cold, the season too short?) But golf in more popular in Canada than it is in either the U.S. or U.K. Ireland is the only country where golf is more popular.

  7. That seems like a lot of birds to me. But what do I know? I'm not a birder. Maybe one day when I get really old. :-)

    1. As birders we get impatient and if we took more time we'd be better off.

  10. Nice that you and your friends could get together and pursue one of your favorite activities and be outdoors too. A private golf course is really not something I would enjoy.

  12. These people are farmers but it's a large family so I guess they can keep up a golf course.

  13. I saw a flock of sandhill cranes flying overhead this afternoon. We see them every spring but I've never seen in the fall. I love their distinctive call.

  15. I've never heard of canary reed grass. So it's an invasive species, I take it? Looks like nice countryside nonetheless.

  16. Lightning did that? I would have expected charring and more scattered parts. This is so interesting. I never knew what canola looked like.
