YOU JUST WON'T BELIEVE THIS!

I think I've written about snow more than anything else. Now falls must be getting close to snow!

So you'll never believe this. I took two falls this week!

First, I was looking after my neighbor's yard and had to water some plants. I threw my garden hose over the fence and watered the plants. I threw the hose nozzle back over the fence but not the hose. Somehow, the hose caught on my foot when I was leaving  and I didn't notice it until I was on my face on the ground. The hose felt like my foot was hooked on a rubber band.  I was very lucky that I landed on new soft sod.  Next time it could be on cement. Yes , I remember that when old people fall their head hits the ground before they know they are falling.

Then I was applying flashing to a small garden shed. I had to put my ladder in behind the bleeding heart . So one of the many times I came down the ladder , I fell. I don't know if I missed the last step or got off the ladder with one step left to go or if the ladder fell off the board to cover the soil under the bleeding heart or if I just tipped the ladder over. I landed in a peony and before I got up the ants had found me and they didn't like me.

Okay, I'm not looking for sympathy. I know what I'm going to get here and I won't like it.

However, I know that I must learn to be much more careful around my feet. I find it difficult to "slow down" and "be more careful". It's a hard thing to do after living a very active life.

You'll also not believe that I had to look up how to spell nozzle...well maybe you will.

  1. I find being around garden hoses very tricky. I almost trip over them every time I go to water my small garden. I have to step around very carefully.Take care out there.

    1. Hoses get dragged around in different places and we forget where they are.

  2. It is hard to slow down when you are not used to it. Please be careful though because we would hate to hear that you had gotten badly hurt. Ladders are especially dangerous as we get older. My husband has some balance problems and has to stay off ladders and honestly, I don't care too much for them either! I hope you are not too sore from your falls!

  3. Oh no! Well you seem to be ok and that's the main thing.
The one with the ladder was probably fatigue.

    1. I had a fall like that in 2008. It was frightening.

  5. Well, this old person is still hobbling around after having fallen and twisted her ankle. It's still swollen and hurts a lot when I've been resting it and then get up. But eventually I'll get better, but next time... who knows, Red. Glad you're okay.

  6. I'm so sorry. Perhaps you need a supervisor! :-)
P.S. I've had trouble with spelling lately, too!

  7. It is difficult to change who you are. Some people are naturally more careful and some aren't. Even if you think to be more careful sometimes, you will forget at other times. But they probably won't lead to nasty falls, just little things that won't matter. Well, that's my uneducated take. :)

  8. My uncle fell down a few weeks ago and broke his hip. After surgery he was in a Rehab facility where he fell down again and re-broke his hip. I think as we get older we have to really pay more attention and not fall down. Take care there.

  9. Hello,

I am sorry about your falls. I am kind of clumsy and have had many falls, luckily we are not hurt badly. It is a good reminder to watch where you put your feet. Take care, enjoy your weekend!

  10. I tripped over a crack in the sidewalk while out walking back in February and bashed my face and knee. I still have a mark on my knee from it! I was lucky not to break anything, altho, the knee was sore for quite awhile...
We do have to be more careful and pay attention to what we are doing! Glad you weren't hurt!

  11. I hate to be the one to say it, but perhaps you should check in with your doctor to make sure there's nothing wrong with balance or anything else. And the other thing you don't want to hear: nobody over the age of 65 should be on a ladder.

    1. Okay , a slight balance problem stated in my mid fifties. I've had it checked and they didn't come up with anything. I hear your message and it's a good one.

  13. I've become super careful since my fall down the stairs a few years ago. And now that I live alone, I'm even more paranoid I'll fall and be incapacitated and not found for days. I'm glad you seem to be okay in spite of two falls in a short time. Stay safe, Red!

    1. A fall certainly takes some of your confidence away and it takes a while to come back.

  14. Oh gracious! I can identify with EVERYTHING you said. And here's Art saying he needs to get on the 2nd floor roof to clean the gutter. Arrghhh! Thank goodness you were OK.

  17. Tom still thinks he can do more than he probably should, but so far, no falls for him. I on the other hand am very unstable these days and I take no chances. Just walking around is hard enough.
You may need to rethink your aging abilities.

  19. Mr. Red,
Those of us over 50 should not be climbing anything, nor be on ladders without a friend nearby. The friend can't stop your fall, but they can call 911. Yep, hoses are alive and dangerous. One 85-year-old friend tripped over a gasoline pump hose because she thought she could step over it while it was placed in her car's gas tank opening!
Glad your okay for now. Please be careful. I've had many patients who fell right into the coffee table: bad bruises and broken eye sockets are not fun. Linda in Kansas

  20. I'm just so very glad that you weren't broken and managed to write this. I go everywhere looking at me feet these days having had a couple of really nasty scares (and lucky escapes).

  21. There's one obvious solution. Get Jean to do the jobs while you sit in a deck chair with a megaphone, directing her.

  22. You are lucky indeed. You must be made of rubber! The thing that shocks me is how lifechanging one fall can be.

So, have a care there, Red!

  24. The last time I fell, I broke three ribs. It was a reminder that I'm not as young as I think anymore.

  25. Just slow down and be more careful! I got entangled in a hose the other day...luckily a tree was nearby and I could steady myself!
