CATCHING UP?

Some of the blogs I follow show many excellent murals on buildings. It seems that wall murals are very common in Europe and they have some excellent artists.

So what a surprise a few days ago when I was downtown and saw a major mural project. It will take us a long time to catch up to other places with murals.

It looks like more murals are planned so you might see some more photos here.

Magpies would be a good subject here . Enlarge and read the information. The artist some how or other did not use the lower left of the space?  Some guy tried to help out with the empty space by parking is car in front of the empty space.

Now I really like this mural. The space was well used and I wonder what the person is thinking about? Freedom?

This mural is a waste of paint unless the building owner just wanted a paint job.

    1. There are many excellent painters now. The more I look at the guy with the hoody , the more I see what may be going on.

  2. I really like that magpie painting. I didn't even know they were scavengers. They have such a distinctive coloring.

    1. magpies are also very intelligent. However, they are nuisances here.

  3. I love those first two and especially the bright colors of the magpies. The last one looks like it might be an underwater scene?

    1. I guess I'm biased against magpies because they can be a big nuisance.

  5. We have a few. Cars do tend to obstruct the views.

  6. I really love the idea of these murals. Some are amazing, others not to my taste, but taken as a whole, it makes an eclectic collection. That last mural looks like a shadow, which is interesting to me.

  9. I like the mural movement that is happening. It gives new life to otherwise drab alleys and side streets.

  10. The magpie mural is a beauty. The last one could be a continuation of the one with the person looking at the scene with the lake or whatever it is.

  11. The only thing the car did was give me perspective about the size of it. And I do love the guy in the raincoat one.

  16. I think the magpie guy probably DID leave empty space at the bottom so cars wouldn't block the art. I love that tall one of the person's back -- really beautiful!

  19. Good street art can add a lot of human interest to a town. On the other hand, quickly sprayed name tags just look messy - spoiling the environment we share.

  20. This post reminds me that I should say thank you. Why? Well, over the years Hiawatha House has given me many good ideas for my own blog. I don’t think I’ve ever snapped a photo of a mural on a building here in Seattle to share on John’s Island. Lately we have lots of new murals here in Seattle. I believe it started a few years ago with lots of graffiti on buildings and folks got tired of trying to get rid of it. I saw a story on the news describing how building owners had found graffiti artists willing to paint a big mural on the building. When they do this the artists sign the work and the other graffiti artists will leave it alone. So now we have some interesting murals without graffiti. Putting murals on my list of future topics on John’s Island. Thanks Red!
