COMPLICATIONS

Finding out that my SD card was not working was easy. The second step in checking showed me the SD card was not working. To check if the card was faulty I put in an old card. The old card worked perfectly.

So off to the store (Staples) to buy a  new SD card. Oh wait! I checked the package and the non functioning card had a ten year warranty. I bought the card three years ago. So I felt better already.

When I got to the store , they explained that the 10 year warranty was the company's warranty and not the stores. The proper way to process this warranty was to check the company. Oh! Oh! But they said they could work something out for me. This is where it got complicated. the store would give me my money on a gift card. I could use the gift card to buy an new SD card or anything else in the store. So  I bought a new card. I still had $1.05 left over. The new card had a one year company warranty.

Then they wanted to know if I wanted to purchase a store warranty on the new SD card. The store warranty was $5.00 for 2 years. The new card cost 11.99. So do these boys know how to make money.

So is anybody still following me on this deal? It took me a while to get this through my head and if I did this again it would be a different choice.

  1. I've never had an issue with an SD card, but then I hardly ever use my big Nikon SLR anymore. Usually extended warranties aren't worth it.

    1. First time I ever had a problem with an SD card. I think on larger appliances we will have to by added insurance. Repairing large appliances can be tricky.

  2. I would have kept the one year warranty...the cards are not that expensive and you can replace them yearly...I have some that I have been using for about 10 years:)

  4. It never crossed my mind to buy a warranty for an SD card, probably because I never would. I hope your camera is up and running now.

    1. It didn't cross my mind to buy a warranty but they were Staples really pushed you to buy a warranty.

  5. I think I have only had one failure in my many years. Many high end cameras have two memory card slots, just in case. Professionals wouldn’t want to lose a while shoot.

  6. I haven't used a camera with an SD card in years, Red. I just use my phone now when I want to snap a photo.

  7. I never buy those plans. I cannot remember a time that I've ever regretted that situation either.

    1. It makes more sense on a larger item like a clothes washer.

  8. At least you have a new card and it's working, at a fairly low cost.

  9. For something like an SD card, a relatively inexpensive item, I think a store warranty is probably more trouble than it's worth. But that's just me!

  10. I'm not sure when the last time I used a regular SD card but it has been a long time. I'm sure I have a pile of them in my "technology" drawer in the office where I store all sorts of things like that. I do have a few micro SD cards that I swap out of my game camera and my streaming boxes for the television sets so they can have more apps uploaded at any given time to speed up the process of finding something to watch.

  11. I had the last SD card in this tablet declare itself corrupted....and empty.
Fortunately all the images are on Google storage....but the rest was lost.

No, your purchase contract was with the shop....not the company who made the card...so they should reimburse you and then deal with the manufacturer themselves...every time...

  14. Red, Have you ever noticed when you purchase a product that has a warranty, the warranty itself is usually printed in very small letters. They sometimes call it the “Fine Print.” They do that on purpose … usually it’s pretty confusing. John
