Today was my yearly visit with the optometrist. Here, seniors get one appointment with an optometrist each year.
My optometrist is a former student Dr. D so that is a pleasure to be with someone I'm familiar with. I also taught his two brothers and a sister. Dr. d was an all round good influence in the school. And he was a very able and competitive basket ball player. Smooth!
But I'm getting off my topic.
I joked with Dr. D about one test and the possibility of cheating! However, my real concern about that test is that I do it correctly so that the measurement is correct. It's a peripheral vision test. You are told to look at a little black square in the center of the diagram and notify them when you see any movement in the diagram. I find it hard to concentrate on the little black square. My eyes wander around the square. However, they are satisfied with the test results.
However, after the examination , I was told that my prescription had changed very little and that I didn't need new glasses. I was told that I had two very healthy eyes. I had cataracts done on both eyes two years ago. I only need reading glasses. I realize that I am a very fortunate senior to not have visual challenges.
I also enjoyed the little visit where we talk about old teachers and students.
Red, as a fellow retired teacher, this is one of the things I love about your blog. It really makes my day when I have a chance to say a few words with a former student. Your story about Dr. D. brings me a smile. We are lucky to be able to enjoy these encounters. John
ReplyDeleteI still live in the same area so once in a while I see former students. I had an former student see me in emergency last fall.
DeleteAs we get older, good results in any test should be celebrated!
ReplyDeleteWe just have to keep working at all these things.
DeleteIt sounds like a great eye appointment experience overall. Well done on the outcomes.
ReplyDeleteI have had cataracts removed so it's not all good.
DeleteI understand. But at least it seems like you haven't had any issues post cataract surgery. I know some people do.
DeleteIt is good to get an annual eye checkup. Take care, enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteWe are fortunate to be given examinations.
DeleteThat sounds similar to the test that I failed. They wanted me to try again. I refused. Maybe next time. Maybe not.
ReplyDeleteMy eyes got slightly better in older age. I am not able to drive without glasses. While that may change again with cataracts or whatever, it's nice not to have that restriction.
Yes, I got rid of the glasses for driving.
DeleteHow wonderful to have a nice visit with D plus an eye check.
ReplyDeleteHe's always a very interesting guy to talk to.
DeleteIt is almost incredible that your eyes have given you such great service over 85 years. Mind you, for about twenty eight of those years you were sleeping!
ReplyDeleteOnly you could think of the sleeping bit. The good teachers know how to keep up a banter with the kids.
DeleteI wish my eyesight was that good. Geographic atrophy has robbed me of most of my vision. And it will only get worse with more age. You are definitely lucky with your eyes, Red.
ReplyDeleteMy wife has just been diagnosed with the beginning of macular degeneration.
DeleteUH oh! Me too! My doctor is recommending I start taking Preservision so I'm following his advice.
DeleteUmmm... just in case, I'm writing this again since I didn't get a notice it printed.
DeleteI was diagnosed last year with the beginnings of macular degeneration too. My optometrist recommended I start taking Preservision so I'm doing that now.
After decades of no changes, the last five or so years have been constant changes. I'm hopeful that they will stabilize again at some point.
ReplyDeleteEyes change as we age.
DeleteCongrats for not needing the glasses dear Red ☺️
ReplyDeleteIt’s rare, most of the seniors need eye glasses.
I feel genuinely happy when you mention you met with former students 🥹
I can imagine the excitement and joy when we see familiar people from far past 😊
Best wishes
I do need reading glasses. Before cataract surgery I needed glasses to drive.
DeleteAll things considered, that sounds like a very enjoyable experience. I enjoyed reading about it as I have to make an appointment to get my eyes checked.
ReplyDeleteHe's a reliable kind of guy.
DeleteGlad it went well!
ReplyDeleteYou are fortunate to have healthy eyes, and also to be able to connect with such a successful former student.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm fortunate so I better keep on looking after my health.
DeleteAnother annual eye test with great results.
ReplyDeleteI worry because my Dad had macular degeneration.
DeleteYou've reminded me that I am probably due for an eye test! Ours aren't free, though!
ReplyDeleteIt's better to get the eye check than miss it.
DeleteWay to go you passed the eye tests!
ReplyDeleteEyes can be a problem.
DeleteGood to keep track of your eye health!
ReplyDeleteIt must be interesting to have former students giving you medical care! At least he was a good student and not someone who was a problem. LOL!
ReplyDeleteHey I don't mind seeing any of them. Had some interesting visits with a couple of guys who had major problems.
DeleteYes, you're a fortunate senior. I wish my vision was better.
ReplyDeleteI know that I'm fortunate.
DeleteUh oh... I hope my comments are not going into your spam box.
ReplyDeleteMy friend used to be a pediatric nurse. When her gynecologist retired, the new doctor came in and said, "Hello nurse Terry." Needless to say she was shocked.
