A TWO JACK RABBIT WALK

I walk three or four times a week. If the weather is nice , I may walk 7 or 8 times in a row. I usually walk 3 to 4 Km. I like to walk after supper. In the summer it's light and I meet many people and their dogs. About the end of September it gets dark before 7 PM . So I walk at 7.00 PM in the dark. In the past I have walked all winter in the dark. Now I'm worried about ice and falling so I walk less in the winter. Many times I do not meet  a person on my winter walks. Most of the time there  is not a car going around.

So on to the Jack rabbits. I like all wildlife.  At this time most of the Jack rabbits have turned white. We didn't have snow until today so   without snow it was easy to see these critters.

So since I've been walking in the dark it's easy to see the Jacks. Last night I saw two. About  week ago I saw seven on my walk. Last night one of them didn't move until I was less than three meters away.

Usually I see four or five deer but not this year so far. You would see four or five bucks in one place and once in a while one would pick a little shoving match with another. As soon s one's head was turned the contest was over.

So you see why I walk at night. There are many critters to see.

  1. Unlike in Illinois, we don't see any rabbits in the wild here... only chickens and cats. You are fabulous to walk so much. I need to exercise much more. I'm sure the doctor will tell me that next time I see him.

  5. I don't see many rabbits around my place but then, I have a healthy population of eagles and hawks that love nothing better than a bit of rabbit for dinner. I do see the occasional clumps of rabbit fur spread around in a small circle here and there.

    1. We don't have many raptors. they hang around the river where it's easier to pick up fish or ducks.

  6. We ‘ve been wondering if the rabbits we saw last spring survived the summer with the bald eagle in the area.

    1. they probably survived as there are easier pickings for eagles on a lake or river.

  7. Many critters and it’s also very quiet. I would love to see a snowy white Jack Rabbit!

  8. I slipped on the ice yesterday, with a fine layer of fresh snow covering it. Luckily, nothing was broken.
I love jackrabbits and they leave some nice fertilizer in my flower beds.

    1. I know that the elderly often break hips in a fall. It is usually the beginning of the end.

  9. I try to walk most days, too, Red but only during the day. I wouldn't walk in the dark because I have a fear of falling and need to see where I'm stepping. Glad you enjoy your walks and get to see critters! Be careful!

    1. I should have a fear of falling. The elderly fall easily enough without ice.

  10. I use a head lamp in the winter so I can see where I'm going. Right now it's light in the morning and dark at night. I need to be able to see where to walk carefully.

    1. I've been using two sticks lately but it's for balance. There is something very peaceful about walking in the dark.

  15. I wonder if jackrabbits will evolve so they turn white later in the season, to match later snowfalls?

  16. The rabbits I see in my neighborhood are almost all early in the morning, or evening and in the night. Won't see too much of them in winter though.

  17. Jackrabbits are so dang fast! I never walk around in the dark, except at Christmastime with family - fun to see the glowing Christmas decor inside houses.

  18. Measuring your walks by the Jackrabbits you see, that's neat!

  19. You should tell someone (your wife) when and where you're going and when to expect you back. We old jackrabbits can't run like we used to.
