ABSENCE

I've been away from the blog for more than two weeks. But I have a good reason.

Starting back in January I had a 20 minute session with double vision. I thought nothing of it but my friend Mike told me in no uncertain terms to get it checked. I was sent for an ultra sound of my carotid arteries. One was found to be 80% blocked ,

This was sent to a specialist in Calgary who measured it at 85% blocked. As a result surgery was recommended.

That surgery took place  two weeks ago in Calgary, Alberta. So the  right carotid artery was cleaned out of its plaque. I'm happy with this as it lessens the possibility of stroke. I'd never heard of vascular surgeons before. I have always been active and eaten a reasonably good diet. My  cholesterol level was in the high normal. I was surprised to find the blockage.

Recovery has been tougher and longer  than I thought. So I've had time to consider a few things. I pondered the state of my blog. Should I continue or stop? Things went back and forth in my mind. At present I look forward to continuing. There's still great satisfaction in writing a blog.

You find out how good your neighbors are in this situation. One guy has shovelled my snow. My neighbor took us to Calgary and then looked after us every minute. She had been a paramedic and had gone to this hospital many times. She explained what every test was. I would say, "Darcee put that in English for me." Darcee looked after the micro manager and found a wheel chair to move her.

So we were very fortunate to have good people look after us.

  14. Hi Red, I knew something was going on when you didn’t post for more than 2 weeks. Just amazing to hear about your surgery. In 2010, before I met you in the blogosphere, I had a triple bypass so I have a good idea of what your going through. Did you have open heart or did they install a stent? Either way, it’s great to hear it’s going well. I recall a lot of pain so take it easy. I’d say my recovery took about 6 months until I felt reasonably normal again. You are lucky to have Darcee around. Regarding your blog … keep going as long as it’s fun for you. I’m considering the same question while taking a break. Best wishes, John

  19. It sounds like you have had to be brave Red. I am very glad to hear that you have had the surgery and by the sound of it it has been successful. Mike deserves a hefty pat on the back for pushing the process along and Darcee was so kind to drive you to Calgary and support you when you really needed support.

Surgery is hard on the body, even more so as we age, and it will take awhile to recovery. Take care.

  29. I tend to write blog posts for 2-3 weeks in advance so friends won't ask me what happened to me. I'm still battling vertigo but it's getting better. I had it for 3 months the last time.

I hope you will continue to be here, Red. And I'm so glad you got the necessary medical care. That sounded pretty darn scary. Thank goodness people who cared about you encouraged you to get help. Please take good care of yourself.
