Be it resolved that they keep digital cameras away from the idiots. May I make my case.
My daughter gave me a small digital camera a long time ago. Then I bought a much nicer digital camera.
So I was really ready to take pictures. I took many digital photos of things I really liked . I took several photos of the same thing. I went to the same places may times and got more photos. I have many photos of seasons.
Now one thing I didn't know about was a file system. A filing system is still beyond me. So my phots are scattered all over the place, I edited photos but did not delete the originals. Sometimes I edited three or four times. I labeled very few photos. I have learned how to label photos but don't do it because it's not in my routine.
What brings about all this self criticism? Since I bought a laptop I now have to import my photos from the old PC. Okay, that should be simple and it is. However, I had about 7000 photos. These photos are largely unorganized. Some of these photos I do not recognize. What was the location? Why was a photo taken?
So now this old boy is going through and deleting photos he doesn't want before importing them to the laptop. So far I've deleted about 1500 photos.
Poor me!
We all have photos scattered around multiple files and devices. You are almost 25% of the way through. I think that's a great effort!
ReplyDeleteIt has become your winter project. No doubt you are recovering some good memories along the way.
ReplyDeleteYou have a big job ahead of you!
ReplyDeleteIf it has to be done, winter is a great time to do it.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI have all my photos backup to external hard drives. I have 3 of these drives and I hope they keep working. It is good to delete some photos, they take up space on your computer. Take care, have a great weekend.
Categorising photographs takes time. I create too many categories, according to my husband.
ReplyDeleteYou learn as you go, Red. Now you know and the photos you keep will be more organized and the ones that have meaning for you.
ReplyDeleteI imagine that most of my digital photos will be lost when I'm gone. There won't be shoe boxes of printed photos like we got when my folks died.
You're more advanced than I am! Maybe your polar bear took some scenic shots while you weren't looking. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteRed, some good comments above. This post brings a smile to my face. Fortunately, ever since I started working with computers I’ve been all about keeping things organized. The last time I checked I had over 20K image files. I keep them organized by year and then by changing the name of some files with the topic. For example, the file name, as it came out of the camera, might be “10012.jpg”. After that file is imported to the computer, and stored on a hard drive, I might change the name to “yellowstonevisit2012.jpg” So, the file is still in a Folder with many other 2012 images, but a search for 2012 Yellowstone will bring up that file and it’s easy to see the others around it. Of course, this isn’t a perfect solution. But as long as you’re going through your files and deleting some, you might as well make some changes to the ones you are keeping to make them easier to find in the future. Best wishes, John
ReplyDeleteI've learned the hard way that it is much easier to stay organized on a computer than attempt to organize things after the fact.
ReplyDeleteI need to get back to that job. I haven't kept up in the last couple of years. My phone sends everything to the iCloud, but to save then I need to download then to a non-cloud file. I take too many photos, but since many of them end up on my blog, I can save them there for now, and get rid of most of them. Then as soon as I do that, I want a photo and I can't find it.
ReplyDeleteI'm asking myself WHY?
Sorry Red but I have no sympathy. As a former member of the teaching profession, your organisational skills should have been honed to perfection. At least now you have realised that importance of labelling and storing in accessible folders.
ReplyDeleteMy son-in-law was here earlier this month with daughter and granddaughter. He was working on exporting all my data from my small temporary computer and installing them into the bigger one. Well... as he was doing this he asked why I had so many of the same photos in different files. The same photos were in family, travel, Tiffany and Keola. But I just can't figure out a way so that I can find them easily. Sigh... So... I know what you're going through.
ReplyDeleteI know the feeling, Red.
ReplyDeleteYes, this is the danger with digital. At least with film we were limited in the number of frames we could take! I post everything chronologically to both Flickr and my back-up disk, so mine are more or less organized, though I would have trouble finding any individual photo on the disk alone. The best advice I could give is to delete anything you think you don't want -- as you're already doing -- because reducing overall numbers makes a HUGE difference.
ReplyDeleteOh Red, it was so good to see a comment from you on my blog. Thank you! I am an idiot when it comes to digital anything. The "Computer Guy" in town sat with me for an hour showing me how to organize, make folders, and delete unwanted pictures. I was so excited! Got home and couldn't remember a thing he had said and couldn't make heads or tails out of my notes. :)
ReplyDeleteBeen there done that. Once you're in to it, the time will go by fast and then you'll be organized.
ReplyDeleteFor sure!! It is the bain of my existence deleteing photos!
ReplyDelete1500 photos deleted - that's progress! I need to take time soon to deal with my photos too.
ReplyDeleteYou could store your photos on a hard drive independent from your laptop. -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteOh, that's a project I would've put off - way off! lol, good you're tackling it.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to this so easily dear Red because I have same exact problem with my phone library,I don’t have time to delete extra pictures so I can move them to my iPad library, although my phone photos move to google photos of my private space I need to have them on iPad because google space shows only if we have internet
ReplyDeleteIt keeps delaying ðŸ˜
