STORIES

A few days ago I was listening to  CBC and they had one of Stuart McLean's stories on the program.

Stuart Mclean  is one of Canada's best loved story tellers. I think his best stories are about a fictional community where he has the people reacting to each other. The stories are humorous and goofy.

His main characters are a family made up of (Dave) , Morley and their two Children. There are two  neighbors who are very different.

The story the other day involved Dave cleaning his car. When Dave's car was new he kept it spotlessly clean. Gradually the cleaning was less and less.

So on this spring day Dave began cleaning his car. Amongst all the junk on the floor, Dave found a plant growing. Dave didn't want to throw the plant out but didn't know what to do about it so he left it there hoping Morley , his wife would not find it.

Sooner or later the plant had to be moved from the car  and Dave planted it in the garden.

Years later the little plant that started growing in Dave's car  became a tree in his garden.

I highly recommend these stories. Either you read them your self or get an audio book and you hear Stuart's voice and how he emphasizes the story.

  2. We loved the Vinyl Cafe, we used to listen to it when we were at our summer home in BC. Actually, we loved hearing CBC out at our place that is off the grid and 200 air miles north and east of Vancouver. A good radio and a good antenna wire made reception possible.

  3. I don’t know what it is called now, but there is a podcast featuring those stories. IIRC it is produced by one of the writers or producers of his show.

  6. I saw Stuart McLean on a ferry once, talking to people and collecting their stories. And I saw him once at the Jubilee Theatre. He was amazing and I miss him.

  9. I've seen mushrooms sprout from damp old carpet, and trees sprout in rain gutters that are full of leaf debris, but not a tree in a car. Glad it's survived. Lindain Kansas

  11. I believe that could actually happen in my van sometimes!
His formula of the fictional community of characters is popular among US storytellers, notably Donald Davis and Andy Offutt Irwin-- although i think Donald Davis' are based on his true upbringing and childhood community. I will have to find this Canadian teller of tales!.

  15. Gosh... I haven't listened to the radio for stories in such a long time. Now you've got me curious. A plant growing in the car? Art would be horrified. LOL!

  16. Such a lovely story about a storyteller dear Red 🥰
I found it very interesting because it reminded me days of my youth and adolescence when few voices would sound so charming and beautiful to listen and I would wait for the certain shows.
Those voices and their very compelling way of storytelling still echo in my mind
