Just When You Think It'll Never Happen It Does

I have had an artificial Christmas tree since the "early stone age!" When my kids were little I would involve them in putting the tree up. I would ask for pink branch and they would both dive in the box to find a pink coded branch. When they got older my daughter branched off to the decorating of the tree with her mother. When ti kids left home and didn't always come back for Christmas the putting up of the tree was somewhat sporadic.

So I would ask my wife when she wanted me to put the tree up. I'm a big kid and to put the tree up Dec. 1 would be fine with me. My wife would sat, "I'll tell you when I want it up." So over the years I would wait until I received the request to put up the tree. Sometimes it would be so late it was only a few days before Christmas. One or two times it didn't get put up at all.

So this year on Dec. 13 I was requested to put up the tree. It's close to Christmas and to me it's just about not worth the time to raise the tree.

So I was hiding in the weeds and thinking ,"Maybe this year it'll never happen," and then oops! It does happen and the tree has to be put up.

  1. I put up my dad's little tree today. It is nice how it brightened his room...and his spirits. Merry Christmas, Red!

  2. A late tree is better than no tree at all in my opinion. I hope you post a shot of the decorated tree, I'd love to see what you do with it! Thank you for stopping by my blog, it's nice to "meet" you Red.

  3. We put our antique tree up sunday. Gerald usually has it up sooner in the month but time seems to have absconded. He pretty much had to do all the decorating as I was nursing a bad neck ache. Yesterday a few decorations got put up. I admit it looks pretty with the sparkling colored lights with my angels and teddybear collection underneath. Hugs!

  4. Next year why not be daring and get out the tree when YOU feel like putting it up, rather than wait for your wife to decide. Sometimes it's good to step out of the grooves we dig for ourselves, don't you think?

  5. Nice tree! You got any snow there you are willing to share? We don't even have any RAIN!

  6. DJan , we have about six inches of snow on the level...just good enough to set a very good ski trail. I'm sure you'll have lots at higher elevations. We have had a lot o snow in the mountains...excellent downhill skiing.

  7. Chartreuse, old habits are hard to kick. I complain but it works well in the end. But you have a good idea!

  8. I would guess that your antique tree is actually an antique rather than mine which is just plain old.
Hope the neck gets better right away.

  10. Wendy, good idea to put up a tree for your Dad. Some of those rooms that old people have to live in are pretty spartan. For my Dad we put up pictures etc. but he didn't have much sight left.

  11. I WAS the tree put 'er up-er here and finally decided I really didn't enjoy doing it enough so I quit years ago. I still sometimes put up my antique nativity but other than that it's pretty un Christmas like around here.

  12. There's something about a Christmas tree - it's like the finishing touch in decorating. You did a great job putting it up and I'll be waiting to see it decorated. I'm like you. I'm a big kid at heart! Great job, Red!

  15. We have a tree very like yours and I must confess it is matching the coded branches into the correct slot which is always a memory for me from when The Lad was growing up.

  16. We don't put up a tree, but my family did when I was growing up. I used to go with dad to collect it. I miss the fresh smell.

  17. Leah, I miss the fresh smell. I grew up in the middle of Sask. and we didn't have spruce trees or many other trees. When the tree came in it was a great smell.

  18. I love it! I went for years without one. Our little one is up, and decorated and I haven't lost too many baubles to the cats!
    Cheers from Cottage Country!

  22. I remember being so excited when it came time to put the tree up, and search for those color coded branches. Seemed too we always had to place it in a corner because there werent' quite enough ornaments to fill it out if we were putting them all the way around. I also still get a kick out of some of the light set you have, with the colored foil stars or flowers or whatever they're supposed to be around the little lights. Very retro!
We finally put up our tree (we use a fake, but they're much more realistic these days) a couple of weeks ago. I like how most of our ornaments have a story behind them. I have one that's a Santa, but done up Inuit style. I'm guessing I got it from you guys, but I don't know the background behind it. It looks hand-made. Ring any bells?
Also fun to put up the other decorations; I remember always wanting to put the static-stick nativity stuff up in the livingroom window, and Mum had these fancy little candles that made a winter scene, and we'd put that on the dining table on a piece of mirrored glass. She never did light the candles.
My old pride and joy items are a cardboard cutout Santa I won in grade 2 in a Bingo game. I still have it and stick it up on a door each year. That, and the ornament I made in grade 5 with the coathanger wires covered in white yarn bits, and a Santa with Mrs. Claus ornament hung inside all that framework.
Love all those things each year when I bring them out. To heck with waiting! Pull the tree out on December 1 and have fun!!

  23. Well, Michelle , you should write a post on this as you have memories of the events that I've forgotten. I will do some research on your ornament
