Curious Geese

On Saturday I went to a wetlands with my Saturday morning bird group.

We decided to try something we often talk about but never do. We would sit on a bench and look at went by us. The pond we chose was about 3 hectares( 6 or 7 acres). When we sat down there was a pair of geese with some goslings on the far side of the pond. There was some goose chattering. the pair slowly moved , all the while being very alert. We didn't know it but they were deciding whether they should come and visit us. After about 15 min the geese and their goslings were right in front of us. I think they were looking for  handout but we had to disappoint them.

There were a number of ducks on the pond and some sparrows were in the brush along the pond. we got glimpses of the sparrows but not enough to make an identification. they did have a beautiful song.

  1. Oh I love these geese since I'm not a farmer for them to destroy my fields and crops. I also don't like their poop because it looks like cigars. I just like geese in general as long as I don't have to clean up after them.

  4. Teaching the little 'uns to beg! Staying put and letting the birds come to you -- that's what I do on my porch all day.

  8. How funny that the geese had a conversation about whether or not to visit!

  9. Was it Buddha who claimed that if you sit in one place long enough the world will pass by you?

  10. They're photogenic, even with the various issues that rise up around them. I photographed some not too long ago who were happily trimming the grass.

  15. Hi Red, I do think they were looking for handouts. I used to see these same birds when walking around Green Lake here in Seattle. It surprised me how they didn't seem to be afraid of humans at all. Dogs was another story. :-)

  16. We had them here at beginning and for them to disappear is a miracle. They have had them in the park and swim area for over 10 years I am told. So far the last week no quaking disturbances. As when they were here. They were just as bad leaving their back end donations then the dogs.
