Where Should We go to Eat?

When I was a child eating in a restaurant only happened when we went to a distant town (30 mi) for a day's shopping. Sometimes we took sandwiches and ate in the car. So it was a big treat to eat in a restaurant.

As a young person I had a few bucks of extra money. You know how teen agers can eat. So it didn't matter what time of day you could always tuck away a hamburger. I remember eating in mid afternoon and later in the evenings. In those days most places were closed by 10:00 PM.

As a young broke couple we rarely ate out. By that time the chains had been established. We had fast food such as A&W.

With young kids there was another challenge. It was easier to eat at home.

With older children we ate out once a week and everybody had a week for their choice of restaurant.

Now my kids are gone many years ago. We didn't eat out much.

Now that we're older we,ve got tired of cooking and so eat out more often. However, I still prefer home cooked meals even if they are very simple.

So this post has got to where I planned. We have an awful time to decide where to go to eat. One of will say I like Chinese food. The other doesn't like Chinese food. One of us likes Mexican. The other doesn't . So for starters we agree on very little as far as food is concerned.

So the discussion goes on and then out come the coupons and that complicates things again. In our town there is a shortage of good restaurants. There are a couple of fancy places. These days most other restaurants are chains. There are a few Vietnamese that are private.

So sometimes we find a place that will have enough choices that we both find something we like. For example, one place has a great soup and salad bar and also great steak sandwiches. Sometimes we can make a compromise.

So for eating out there's more pleasure than just the eating out. There's lots of fun to decide where you will eat.

How about you? Is it easy to find a place to eat?

  1. Sheffield has a wide range of eateries and Shirley and I are both open about what we eat - we will try anything. Tonight we are at long last going to use a voucher that our daughter gave us at Christmas - it's for a fancy restaurant called "Rafters" and the voucher is for $208 CAD (£120). It should be delightful.

  2. My mother was the opposite with us, she could never stop going out to eat. I never liked eating inside most places. I'd rather take it home and eat it in front of a TV

    1. The fun of eating is to get out of the house.

  3. We have so many places to eat out, but I have gotten used to the simple home cooked food we eat and actually prefer it. The problem when we eat out is that I eat more than I really want. I almost always order salmon when we eat out, but then again, I live in the Pacific Northwest where it's fresh and delicious. :-)

  4. Living in a small town i often travel to other towns to eat. I told a neighbor I had went to her favorite place for chicken fried steak last Wednesday, and think she was a bit ruffled I didn't ask her also. Many small cafes have specials each day so that helps decide where to go.This place has the owner as the only employee so she does everything, including bringing a basket of cookies around periodically.Another breakfast place I like seats 99, 11 at a time on it's sign. You have 2 tables and a counter to sit.

    1. I remember great places to eat when I was in Chicago (La Grange). We don't have the owner operator type of restaurant here.

  5. We love food and can eat anything at anytime. We do have a shortage of unique restaurants but lots of high-end and low-end chains that we go to. The hard part is when the children are involved as their spouse do have a few foodie issues.

  6. My hubby and I have the same problem! He'll want Chinese and I'll want Mexican, or he'll want pizza and I want to go to the local brewpub! Ah, marriage is all about compromises!

  7. Portland is known for its abundance of restaurants with many to choose from. Mrs. C. and I don't have problems deciding, although lately I've been nixing all-you-can-eat places because of the temptation to over eat.

    1. You have more variety in your restaurants. We have Chinese buffets but no other buffets.

  9. We have many specials but lately our food land Grocery store has the chicken cooked and there is different potatoes to choice from. So we pick up corn and we eat twice a week like that for the two of us. For to go out Special. We go to the Pepper Mill and they have the best of the best food. Seafood platter, delicious steak dinner usually Specials. Right now we have the visitors so we pick up like I said. When the kids were small do you remembered Ponderosa Red? The place looked like the olden days of the T.V program with the swing doors of cowboy time. The kids could have the coke in a bear mug. Those steaks back then was dirt cheap dinners if you went early. And my oldest son back then ate that the steak as the daughter and other son. Loved hot dog with fry's or a hamburger with fries. Now they are nil . Nice to see you and the guys.Your friends may have known that if you have not. Let me know. Nice place your at. Your right if you have a gang. You get different opinions. Take four out. We have no problem.

    1. You bring back good memories of Ponderosa. You also got baked potatoes. My son worked there while in high school. The eboys taught together in the seventies when we were young with kids and all were broke.

  10. Fortunately, we have quite a few choices around here. But we still have a tough time deciding! In the end, we usually opt for the same handful of places we frequent. Ah well...at least we know we'll like the food there!

  12. You surely must have been eavesdropping on the conversations in our house. The other thing that happens here when daughter is visiting is all 3 of us immediately say we don't care where we eat, all of us knowing that's not true.

  13. I had to chuckle at the memories your post brought back to me about the "seasons" of life and how it has changed the eating out activity. Where I live, we have a gazillion restaurants to choose from. We're lucky that way. But sometimes I just want a plain old regular restaurant. There are very few of those around anymore.

  14. We have to drive many miles to find a restaurant. We do go out in the late afternoon sometimes if we have skipped lunch...and have an early supper. :)

  15. Our eating out history is much like yours. We actually prefer my home cooked meals, but I get tired of cooking, and /tom is always up for going out when I suggest it.
We have a huge number of choices to eat, but we don't even try most of them. We don't really appreciate expensive dining and try to avoid fast food, so we tend to eat at a limited number of places.

  16. We find it tough, since hubby cannot have dairy, yeast or eggs!

  17. We have the same debates. One possible solution: Do takeaway, with one person getting it from Mexican and another from Chinese!

  18. One of the advantages of eating almost any type of cuisine is that I'm usually able to fit in with the rest without any bother.
