Getting Old Has Some Funny Parts

Most of the time we hear complaints about getting old. "Getting old ain't for sissies." I can't do this anymore or I can't do that anymore. This doesn't work. That doesn't work. My ears don't work very much anymore!

Now some of the complaints about aging are very real and serious. Strokes, heart attacks, cancer. The medical establishment seems to have a bucket of pills to throw at us for every ailment. It's debatable how much good the medication actually does.

Some people worry about their health. We can't help it. Some people worry about their end.

Seniors tend to associate with seniors so much of the news isn't good. My 87 year old friend had a bike accident this summer and broke his right femur. He's doing okay and is ready to come back birding with me.

However from time to time I experience things that just crack me up. This morning I was putting my underwear on when I noticed I still had the pajamas on!!! I wish I could have seen the look in my face. I had a little chuckle. I sometimes look for 10 when I'm doing a Sudoku. I have a silver car. My friend caught me trying to unlock her silver car. Did she razz me about it! That one really catches your attention.

Now some people really worry that they are losing it when small things like this  happens. You're only losing it when you have the underwear in your hand and don't know what to do with it. We have some mental lapses when we age. I have trouble remembering things in a conversation. I cannot remember a book title or author at the time of the discussion. These things, although frustrating , are not serious.

Now I have one medication that's really worth it. I have senior epilepsy. What's that you say? Google it. You'll be surprised.  I had spells of not making new memories. It's common to many seniors  and many times they land in the nursing home or worse. If diagnosed properly , you live a healthy normal life.

This week was my annual medical check up. I like my physician. He does a thorough check and explains what he's doing as he goes a long. At the end he gives a summary. So I'm in great condition right now. I also visited my optometrist this week. Yes , I have  few issues but they are not serious.

So I try to keep aging in perspective. I have to keep in mind what territory I'm in.  Seniors are fragile. things can change very quickly even though we look after ourselves well.

I hope all the senior bloggers are doing well in mind and body.

  3. Having a "Senior Moment" becomes a part of our lives, hopefully to give us a chuckle. I lost my TV changer Saturday, and succumbed to one channel until I left home. I found it that evening, after going through the trash, and looking in some of the same places as before.

  5. You could of not have written it any better Red. Thumbs up. I agree with you. Now I wish Hillary had been that open in her Physical report. Finally she is not going to take on a trip today. I mean she was stumbling. Hey maybe she had too much wine. Ha-ha. Honest to goodness. Now Trumps doctor was open tee, . I have know Trump for over 30 years. He is in shape. Well Lord and behold. He got a test done today to tell others what condition he is.

Did you see that couple on news today. Talk about health issues. Found in the car with an over doze of Heroin. And the child of four in the car in his car seat. While both of the parents flaked out. And the dad only gets so many hours of imprisonment and the wife says she is innocent. That poor child. What is the world of people coming too.

Great post Red.Thumbs up for your health and a great Doctor.

Thank you for the kind compliments on my blog from you. Enjoy your day.

May I say. Your in big trouble if you put your underwear in the drawer again and go bare bird sighting.

    1. I find it hard to take Hilairy and Donald. They're over the top and don't deal with policy or issues. Yes, I am fortunate. some people have difficult times with dementia.

  6. I'm glad to hear your doctor gave you a clean bill of health. I know what you mean: I keep forgetting words and names but, like you said, these things can be funny if we don't get stressed out about them. Wishing you and the Micromanager the best fall season! :-)

    1. Yes, we can't get bent out of shape if we can't recall something. After a while it comes to us.

  7. Glad to hear you're in good health. I'm also noticing signs of aging but I try and compensate by laughing at myself and not taking anything too seriously.

  8. Glad to hear you're healthy and well. And it's always good to remember although we may have a few minor aches and pains, or memory lapses, things could be much worse.

  9. My dad lives in a retirement home that's also attached to a nursing home. So from time to time, particularly in the latter, someone passes on. It seems magnified if he says, "seven people died here in the winter."

    1. I got the same thing from my Dad. It became common that people died around them.

  10. If you can remember and blog about all the things you forgot for a moment or two, I'd say you're doing just fine! Great news about that clean bill of health. That's what everyone wants to hear.

  11. I had never heard of senior epilepsy. It's good that there is medication and you can enjoy life -- and a few laughs at yourself! I don't think a week goes by that we don't have something we've done to laugh about.

  12. Senior epilepsy, how interesting. Hmmm, wonder if I should ask Bob's Doctor about that. I would think that would mean a referral to a neurologist. I did Google senior epilepsy and found the information interesting. I'll speak to nurse daughter about it. Thanks for making me aware of such a thing.

    1. I didn't believe my neurologist so I came home and googled and found she was right. Sometimes it's easy to diagnose and sometimes difficult. There is an area in the brain that is going at a much higher rate.

  13. I hate it that my body isn't hanging in there. Went top pick up sticks from a tree that was cut down in our yard. It was not for very long for picking up and raking. Still the next day meant hardly able to get out of bed. Takes time to limber up anymore.

  14. We are all in the same boat, some sinking and some floating away! I am sorry to hear you have Senior Epilepsy but I am glad you have medication to take for it. Yes there is a medication for everything now a days. I just take one pill for my blood pressure. :)

  15. I had not heard of senior epilepsy, so I googled it. Thank you! :) My mother-in-law turns 87 this month and is doing amazingly well, and I hope it continues that way for some time to come.

I admire the way you live your life and hope I can age as gracefully as you are doing. I am already trying not to complain too much about aches and pains, and instead be grateful for the good stuff.

You and the Mrs. look fabulous!

  16. We definitely have to keep a sense of humor as we age.

  17. Very true post Red. Your little story about getting dressed had me in stitches. It is good to keep a sense of humour all throughout life. Even now with my mom unable to talk, I try to make her laugh and we've shared a few good ones. Have a wonderful week.

  18. I enjoyed your sense of humor in this post. Loved it in fact. I have noticed now that I am in my mid 60s things don't quite work as well as they used to. Even though I try to put my car keys in one spot for instance, or my telephone, do you think they end up in the same place twice? Nope! ;) Loved the photo of you both.

  19. As old age sweeps over you like a blanket of winter snow, the micro manager will look after you. Yorkshire girls are as tough as old boots so no need to worry Red.

  20. And here I thought I was the only one.
That is could tell the plot and details of hundred, maybe thousand of book I've read. And recommend some but unable to remember the title nor the author... Ugh!!!

  21. Hi Red, This is a very kind post, at least from the perspective of another Senior. I capitalized that just out of respect to all of us ... ha ha. Everything you said is true. Wow, I'm taking it one day at a time. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? I like your closing photo. I take it that the lady by your side is your Micro Manager ... but she looks too sweet to be a Micro Manager! :-)

  22. You are definitely a sweet looking couple and everything you said is so true. You should have seen me at Zumba yesterday forgetting my steps. It provided a nice laugh for people around me. The other day I almost poured coffee into my cereal.
