"SMART ASSES ' PAY BIG TIME

Alright , it's another computer story!

It seems to me to be outrageous that when you buy a computer, they are ready to set it up for you for a big price. In my case they offered to set things up for $200.00.Now my computer only cost $600.00. We hear all kinds of stories about setting up new computers. Some of them are scary and some say, "No problem . Computers are easy to set up." To my thinking , it should be easy to set up a computer.

Well, here goes. I waited a few days to build up my courage. I read the rather small manual...76 pages. My camera manual is 234 pages.

I started . Things went well and smoothly.

I got to the part where I installed apps. The apps showed up on the screen. I thought there was more so I looked for something to click on to move forward. Nothing! Well then back up! Nothing.

I was stuck with a blue screen with 4 window like squares with light streaming through.

Finally, I shut down the computer. Next morning? It's still there. Well a quick call to Asus should fix this. Two calls to Asus talking to Asus dummies and then the third call he offered to set things up to reset the computer.

Okay , I go through the same thing. Well, I slept on this overnight. It finally hit me that the funny blue screen was my home page. I was finished setting up my computer! The actual time to do this was about 20 minutes. I'm sure a guy from the store would take about two minutes. They would also teach me a few things which I would have to learn on my own.

So that was a rather embarrassing error but I admit it.

Next , I had some challenges with my pass words. All my pass words have  a similar key stroke. In Canada our keyboards must have French. Somehow or other that stroke would type the French. I discovered that by looking at my password when I typed it in.

So I had a few errors but I got my computer set up and didn't have to pay the rats $200.00

You know that from previous posts I try to do things myself and it's a challenge but gives satisfaction when it's done.

  2. Good for you, Red! I'm impressed. And like you, I hate paying someone for something I could do myself.

  3. Good for you. Setting up computers should be easier, and we should all be able to do it ourselves. But alas, it isn't that easy and most of us can't.

  5. I also tried to do it myself and got it 80% done but still had to call someone into work on my peripherals even though I had most of the drivers. It cost me $100 and I had to give away a printer and buy a new cable for my second monitor...but at least I was able to use my very expensive computer.

    1. I have the computer problem but I was fully expecting it. There's no driver on Windows 10 for my printer.

  9. It irritates me when I click just the right button to switch over to French Canadian, because then the punctuation ends up going nutty on me.

  10. Doing anything with a computer is a learning experience, but I'm convinced that it's worth it to go through the trouble. It keeps us more "current" with technology. So bravo to you for doing it all yourself! (Not to mention saving the money!)

  11. Yes they'll try to sell you extra service when purchasing a computer, happens everywhere it seems. Good that you got it all set up working. Greetings!

    1. It's not just computers where extra service is sold. I paid good money for a washing machine service pack.

  15. I had a very similar conversation with my brother-in-law yesterday. He had a new computer to set up and there you go. Works great now but getting there was a trial, and you are right about the feeling of satisfaction at the end of it all.

  18. You bet Red. My kids are computer buffs too but live two hours away. So in the same dilemma. So who do I call Tech busters. Charge me and break me. I call them. My money is gone. Have a gal tech now with new laptop she is great she don't charge big dollars. Half the time I forget my passwords. So to get in for starters.
That is number one yes Mama. Then you have password for windows and then Facebook. I read you can use one password for two sites I am in. I wont go on. I am not a student of learning to even do a new blog. Now I have it working. It was a nightmare. So looking at your set up here. Your getting to be a pro red. Congrats!
